Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 6: Last-Minute Fantasy Football Advice for Sunday

Tim DanielsOct 12, 2014

T.Y. Hilton started the fantasy week with a bang, scoring 28 points on Thursday night. Andrew Luck and Arian Foster also had strong showings. That means a lot of fantasy owners are already either in promising shape or playing from behind heading into Sunday's action.

Even if your matchup included players from the Indianapolis Colts' win over the Houston Texans, it shouldn't change the approach to filling out the rest of your lineup. A common mistake is taking more risks with hope of a big return after falling behind early. It rarely pans out.

Ultimately, the tried-and-true formula of relying on recent results and leaning heavily on favorable matchups is still the way to go. With that in mind, let's check out some players right on the borderline for Week 6 and forecast whether they should be starting or sitting.

Kirk Cousins scared off a lot of fantasy owners with a five-point outing in Week 4. He bounced right back, however, scoring 19 points against a strong Seattle Seahawks defensive unit. It solidifies him as a starting-worthy option as he faces the 31st-ranked Arizona Cardinals pass defense on Sunday.

One of the toughest calls concerns breakout players like Branden Oliver. He put up 29 points in his first extended action of the season. While it's unlikely he will approach that total again, a matchup with the Oakland Raiders, which are giving up nearly 160 yards per game on the ground, presents upside.

Eric Williams of ESPN passed along comments from the rookie out of Buffalo, who says going undrafted just added fuel to his internal fire.

"Being an undrafted rookie free agent just makes it sweeter," Oliver said. "We have guys like Antonio Gates and Danny Woodhead—there's a lot of guys—Malcom Floyd. You just got to keep working."

Kendall Wright is back on the radar after a lackluster three-week stretch that saw him tally just 10 points. He scored 20 points last week, highlighted by a pair of touchdowns and 43 unexpected rushing yards to go with six catches. Expect another big day against the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars.

Larry Donnell is an example of the Oliver discussion. He burst onto the scene with three touchdowns two weeks ago but was held without a catch last week. The buzz is gone, but he should get back into the good graces of those who keep faith in a high-scoring clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Baltimore Ravens are nothing more than a fringe option on a weekly basis due to a lack of sacks and middling turnover numbers. Yet, a meeting with the 30th-ranked Tampa Bay Buccaneers moves them firmly into the start category.

Shaun Suisham has slowed down after a strong three-week stretch to open the campaign. A second meeting with the Cleveland Browns, against whom he scored 13 points in the season opener, should give him the scoring chances necessary to get back on track.

Tom Brady finally showed signs of fantasy life with his first 20-point outing of the season last week. He should be a fringe top-12 quarterback moving forward with Rob Gronkowski at full strength. The team's offensive line struggles make him tough to trust against the terrific Buffalo Bills pass rush, though.

Darren McFadden has gotten the most touches in a crowded Raiders backfield. Unfortunately, he's lacked the explosiveness that made him an intriguing option earlier in his career. Keep him on the bench as he goes up against the San Diego Chargers and their top-five defense.

After becoming a popular waiver-wire target with 38 points over two weeks, Eddie Royal came back down to Earth with a four-point showing against the New York Jets. With the Raiders owning the fifth-ranked pass defense, it's safe to assume the hot streak is over and return him to the bench.

For Zach Ertz, the potential is still there. He just isn't a big enough part of the offense to showcase it like he did during what seemed like a breakout performance in Week 1. Until that changes, he belongs on the bench, even in a solid matchup against the New York Giants.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes efforts to help the rushing attack are hurting Ertz:

The Chicago Bears rank 12th among defense/special teams groups so far. It leaves them in the matchup category and this week presents a bad one. They have to go out on the road to face Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons, meaning they should be avoided in all leagues.

Mason Crosby shows that kicking for a high-powered offense doesn't always lead to great fantasy results. He's only hit double-digits once despite the Green Bay Packers scoring the seventh-most points. Keep him reserved for a tricky road test with the Miami Dolphins.
