Pro-FIFA Movie 'United Passions' Running at a Massive, Massive Loss so Far

Sean SwabyOct 7, 2014

Even Hollywood stars can't help Sepp Blatter win.

The FIFA- and Blatter-inspired film, United Passions, which cost $27 million (roughly £16.7 million) and was 90 percent funded by FIFA, is bombing so far in spectacular fashion.

So far, it's taken in only between $150,000 and $200,000 at the box office.

Even with Tim Roth playing Blatter, Sam Neill as Joao Havelange and Gerard Depardieu as Jules Rimet, they couldn't salvage the pro-FIFA flick from crashing and burning.

So far, it's operating at a loss of $26.8 million, to the amusement of Blatter opponents worldwide (so basically, everybody).

AP said that when United Passions—which had its world premiere, attended by FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Depardieu, at Cannes in May—was shown at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, about 120 people paying $22.70 per ticket watched it in a 500-seater cinema.

It reported that, according to film industry data analyst Rentrak, the revenue from that showing would have brought the international box office takings to no more than $200,000.

Rentrak said Switzerland became only the seventh country to screen United Passions in cinemas, with Ukraine the one nation to screen it prior to the summer's World Cup in Brazil. Brazilian film distributors turned down the opportunity to show it.

AP reported that Russia—where takings were $144,000—was the main market. It was also screened in Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia and Hungary.

Nice one, FIFA.
