European Team of the Week: Sizzling Cristiano Ronaldo a Class Apart

WhoScoredOct 6, 2014

The goalscoring form of Cristiano Ronaldo, even by his ridiculously high standards, is becoming absurd now.

The Portuguese again topped WhoScored.com's ratings this weekend with yet another hat-trick—his third in four Liga games—in Real Madrid's 5-0 rout over Athletic. Ronaldo mustered 10 shots at goal in the game with eight of those hitting the target, registering an assist from a total of three key passes to secure a rating of 10 from WhoScored.

On the opposite flank, Arjen Robben was also the recipient of a 10 rating for his role in Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory over Hannover. The Dutchman netted a brace from firing nine shots at goal while also proving his typical menacing self on the wing, completing eight dribbles.

Another man in fine goalscoring form at the weekend was Alexandre Lacazette, who scored all three goals as Lyon secured an impressive 3-0 victory over fellow European hopefuls Lille. The Frenchman's hat-trick came from six attempts at goal, with Vincent Enyeama able to save just one of his four shots on target, earning the forward a rating of 9.63.

Partnering the Lyon man up front is a player who couldn't buy a goal prior to this weekend. Steven Fletcher scored for the first time since last December as Sunderland ran out 3-1 winners over Stoke, and like buses, two came at once.

The Scotland international returned to the sort of form that earned him a move to the Stadium of Light, scoring with both of his attempts on goal and providing an excellent cross for strike partner Connor Wickham to open the scoring.

In a Premier League-dominated Team of the Week this time around, Angel Di Maria is joined in midfield by Liverpool's Jordan Henderson. The former secured WhoScored.com's Man of the Match award with a rating of 9.37 by scoring and bagging an assist—one of five key passes on the day—for fellow summer signing Radamel Falcao to open his United account, as Louis van Gaal's side held out for a 2-1 win over Everton.

Henderson too was able to both score and pick up an assist in an identical scoreline as Liverpool returned to winning ways against West Brom. The midfielder combined brilliantly to see Adam Lallana off the mark for the Reds and scored the winner in a display that encompassed four key passes, three tackles and two interceptions, garnering a rating of 8.81.

The fourth and final Premier League representative in our XI is Branislav Ivanovic, whose role in nullifying the threat of Alexis Sanchez helped Chelsea secure an important 2-0 win over Arsenal. The full-back completed a match-high seven tackles, made four interceptions and won eight aerial duels to pick up WhoScored's Man of the Match award with a rating of 8.80.

Getafe's Sergio Escudero was able to better that rating from left-back with a score of 8.90 as the Spanish outfit earned a late point against Cordoba. The 25-year-old picked up the assist for Baba's 88th-minute equaliser and nearly wrapped up all three points having hit the woodwork in injury time, with four dribbles and four tackles rounding off a superb all-action performance.

Both centre-backs in this week's best XI were on the scoresheet, with Wolfsburg's Naldo scoring the only goal of the game in a victory over Augsburg and Empoli's Lorenzo Tonelli notching one of three as the Serie A outfit romped to a 3-0 win over fellow newly promoted side Palermo. The former won six of eight aerial duels and produced three tackles, while the latter garnered a rating of 8.59 having won five of six aerial duels and completed seven clearances.

Completing our Team of the Week between the posts once again is Verona's Rafael, who earned his second Man of the Match rating from WhoScored.com with a score of 8.98. The keeper produced seven saves and made two successful cross claims to keep Cagliari at bay to earn his side a clean sheet and an invaluable 1-0 win.
