Mike Reiss of ESPN.com later provided an update in the second quarter:
Reiss noted how Amendola's exit thinned an already scant New England receiver corps:
Amendola was hurt in a collision with Bengals safety Reggie Nelson and multiple other defenders and took a kick to the helmet as he came to the ground without making the reception.
Team owner Robert Kraft wasn't concerned before Sunday's game despite New England's .500 start to the first quarter of the year.
"We haven't played well. We haven't played well all year," said Kraft in a radio interview on 98.5 the SportsHub, via ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen. "So I think there's that type of unhappiness, an internal frustration makes you want to overcome it."
This latest development involving Amendola is another adverse hurdle the Patriots will have to clear if they want to maintain their perpetual superiority atop the AFC East.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady needs all the passing targets he can get with an offensive line that has been protecting him rather poorly to begin the 2014 season. It will be up to struggling second-year receiver Aaron Dobson, new free-agent arrival Brandon LaFell and reliable slot weapon Julian Edelman to pick up the slack.
