Chargers' Antonio Gates Moves into 10th on All-Time Receiving Touchdowns List

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 6, 2014

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates caught a pair of touchdowns in Sunday's 31-0 win over the New York Jets to pass Isaac Bruce for 10th place on the all-time receiving touchdowns list, per ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Gates, who caught his first three touchdowns of the season in a Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks, tied Bruce at 91 career scoring receptions with an eight-yard catch in the first quarter of Sunday's game.

The future Hall of Fame tight end then caught his fifth touchdown of the season and 92nd of his career in the second quarter, scoring from 12 yards out to extend San Diego's lead to 14-0.

Both touchdowns came on third downs with Jets safety Antonio Allen in coverage on Gates.

The 34-year-old tight end finished his day with six catches for 60 yards and the two touchdowns, bringing his five-game total this season to 21 receptions for 275 yards and five touchdowns. He ranks second among tight ends this season in touchdowns, sixth in receiving yards and seventh in receptions.

Gates is also second on the all-time receiving touchdowns list among tight ends, with his 92 scores trailing Tony Gonzalez's 111 by 19. The third-place tight end, Shannon Sharpe, is tied for just 64th on the overall list at 62 career touchdowns.

Gates could perhaps catch Gonzalez by the end of next season if he keeps it up, but he would more likely need to play through 2016 to make a run at the tight-end touchdowns record.

While the overall list is presently dominated by wide receivers, it could look quite a bit different by 2020, at which point the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Julius Thomas, Vernon Davis and Greg Olsen will either be retired or deep into their careers.

Of course, the last decade has also been a prolific time for wideouts, with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall all on track to reach 100 career touchdowns.

Gates' 92 touchdowns put him atop the list for active players, five ahead of the second-place Fitzgerald (87) and 11 ahead of third-place Reggie Wayne (81).
