Texans vs. Cowboys: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season

Timothy RappOct 5, 2014

That Battle of Texas lived up to its billing.

In a fantastic matchup that saw Tony Romo punk J.J. Watt, Dez Bryant make several amazing catches, Ryan Fitzpatrick dial up some late magic and Arian Foster tear up the Dallas defense, the Dallas Cowboys improved to 4-1 on the season with a 20-17 overtime victory over the Houston Texans at AT&T Stadium.

Romo finished with 324 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, going 28-of-41 to lead his team to a victory.

The game didn't exactly start with a bang, however, as the teams went into the half with Dallas leading by a 3-0 margin. But the fireworks were certainly lit in the second half.

And it was Romo who lit them, improbably escaping Watt—who was this close to demolishing Romo before the quarterback ducked underneath him—and finding Terrance Williams down the field for a 43-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

It's a play Ed Werder of ESPN suspects Romo won't soon forget:

And it was also a reminder of why the Cowboys have always had Romo's back, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN:

Foster answered with a 15-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, setting up an epic fourth quarter.

With 9:44 remaining in the game, Tony Romo hit Dez Bryant for a touchdown pass that gave the Dallas Cowboys a 17-7 lead over the Texans. Bryant may have gotten away with a slight push-off on the play, per Dan Hanzus of NFL.com:

Bryant certainly knows how to snare touchdown passes, however. Consider this stat from ESPN Stats & Info:

While Bryant was notching that mark, DeMarco Murray made a bit of history himself:

Bryant finished with a whopping 31 carries for 136 yards on the ground.

But Ryan Fitzpatrick and company weren't done, storming back to tie the game at 17 after Arian Foster plunged into the end zone with just 41 seconds remaining. Foster finished with 23 rushes for 157 yards and two scores.

As Football Perspective on Twitter noted, Fitzpatrick wisely relied on his primary weapons down the stretch:

And John McClain of the Houston Chronicle gave Fitzpatrick a rather flattering nickname for his fourth-quarter performance:

Could Tony Romo lead the Cowboys down the field for a quick, game-winning field goal? Or would the Texans get another shot in overtime?

Romo did his job, guiding the Cowboys into range for a 53-yard field goal. But Dan Bailey couldn't deliver, ruining a streak in the process, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:

But Dallas won it in overtime, in large part to one of the catches of the year from Bryant that helped get the Cowboys in field goal range. Albert Breer of NFL.com was left in awe of the talented receiver:

And Jason Cole of Bleacher Report suggests Bryant may have just made himself some money with his performance on Sunday:

Bryant finished with nine receptions for 85 yards and a score.

Bailey had a chance to redeem himself as well and indeed did, hitting a 49-yarder to seal it for the Cowboys. At 4-1, they'll now travel to Seattle for a difficult matchup with the defending champions. Houston, meanwhile, has a short week, as it will face division rivals Indianapolis on Thursday evening.

For the Cowboys, the win ensured they can come out of Week 6 still feeling good about their record. Houston, however, could come out of Week 6 at 3-3 and trailing the Colts in the standings. Suffice to say, plenty was on the line in the Battle of Texas.

Hit me up on Twitter—I'll answer your fantasy questions and make some corny jokes, too. It's more fun than Tony Romo eluding J.J. Watt.
