Eagles vs. 49ers: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2014 Regular Season
It wasn't pretty, and it certainly wasn't to script, but the San Francisco 49ers pulled off a 26-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in a sloppy game for both sides.
The Eagles had another chance for a fourth-quarter comeback but came up short on two consecutive drives. San Francisco's official Twitter account provides a look at the final score following the huge NFC matchup:

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Colin Kaepernick finished the game at 17-of-30 passing for 218 yards, two touchdowns and one interception along with 58 rushing yards. His backfield mate Frank Gore shook off a tough Week 3 performance with 119 rushing yards, 55 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Not all was perfect for Kaepernick, though, as he struggled late with delay-of-game penalties, which stalled out drives. Greg A. Bedard of MMQB noted his take on the quarterback:
For quarterback Nick Foles and the Eagles offense, it was a week to forget. Foles finished without a touchdown, two interceptions and completed just 21 of his 43 passes.
LeSean McCoy had 10 carries for a meager 17 yards as the team rushed for 22 total yards. McCoy has failed to reach 100 rushing yards this season through four weeks, something he did seven times in 2013.
The tables were flipped late in the contest, as the 49ers were the team leading in the final stages and holding on after coming back in the second half. Jim Harbaugh noted the defense's effort, per the 49ers' account:
The first half was an anomaly for both teams. Philadelphia was unable to get anything going offensively but was saved by its special teams and defense on countless occasions.
Kaepernick and the 49ers offense were scuffling and unable to produce a long drive early on, which led to a huge play from the Eagles special teams. Brad Smith recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
That trend would continue for Philly as Malcolm Jenkins forced a second-quarter interception that he returned 53 yards for a touchdown. Philadelphia's official Twitter account noted how historic the pick-six was for Jenkins:
Darren Sproles, another offseason addition for the Eagles, made a statement with an 82-yard punt return for a score to give the team 21 points without an offensive touchdown and a 21-10 lead.
Foles and the potent Eagles offense, on the other hand, did not have a single drive result in a trip to the end zone. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle provides a look at the first-half production for the Eagles:
Much of that was due to a lack of a running game early on, as Michael Fabiano of NFL.com points out:
Meanwhile, the 49ers slowly started to come alive in the second quarter, as Kaepernick found Gore on a 55-yard receiving touchdown. The score stood at 21-13 in favor of Philadelphia at the half, though the Niners proved to have the more confident offense.
That bravado shined through in the third quarter as Kaepernick found Stevie Johnson for a 12-yard touchdown. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area provides a look at the time of possession for San Francisco:
Johnson's score followed a turnover for the Niners, but another offensive weapon would be lost in the third quarter. Vernon Davis, who missed Week 3 due to ankle and knee injuries, was unable to make it through three quarters in his return.
Davis suffered a back injury and missed the remainder of the game, as Around The NFL and the 49ers' official Twitter account noted:
Outside of the Davis injury, there was a lot to like about the second half for the Niners. After what amounted to an awful day for Gore against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 (six carries for 10 yards), the lead back was strong in the second half to tack on to his rushing total.
Mindi Bach of CSN Bay Area passed along a surprising stat for the veteran:
The Eagles nearly set up another heroic fourth-quarter touchdown on the final drive, but Foles' pass sailed wide of Jeremy Maclin with one minute and 50 seconds remaining.
San Francisco was unable to run down the clock, giving the Eagles the ball yet again. But Foles passed into heavy coverage and was picked off to close out a disastrous day for the offense.
Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk provided his take on Foles:
Gore carried the 49ers offense, helping stage the team's first second-half comeback of the season. Not everything was perfect for Kaepernick, but he led the squad on crucial drives to move San Francisco back to .500 and hand the Eagles their first loss.
Moving forward, the Niners (2-2) have slightly easier matchups against the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams over the next two weeks. Having the offense somewhat clicking and with a great defense, the team has a chance to add two wins before facing the Denver Broncos prior to the Week 8 bye.
Philadelphia (3-1) takes on the Rams next week before battling a resurgent New York Giants club. Games against the Cardinals, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers await them after a Week 7 bye, so nothing looks certain for the team after the loss.
Both teams have aspirations of making the playoffs but also have work to do in order to get there.
