8 Biggest Blunders in World Football This Weekend
Another weekend of football in the books brings another slate of blunders to marvel over. The internet, Twitter, Vine and an assortment of other outlets work around the clock to bring us joy in the form of mistakes, bad misses and head-scratching moments.
On the agenda this time around we've Eliaquim Mangala's nightmare in Hull, Christian Abbiati's alternative to "redemption" and Philipp Hofmann's horrendous miss from two yards.
Enjoy!
Eliaquim Mangala's Day to Forget
1 of 8
Oh, Eliaquim Mangala, that's not the way to build upon a Man of the Match performance following a high-profile move!
Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko put Manchester City into a comfortable two-goal lead at the KC Stadium, but the Frenchman soon saw to changing that.
"It was a cracking own goal from Mangala.#mcfc. https://t.co/FupgwFNZiR
— BlueSoldier (@BlueSoldier_8) September 27, 2014"
First he netted an own goal, then he gave away a penalty to help Hull City draw level. Whoops.
Wayne Rooney's Reckless Red
2 of 8
Captain of England, Captain of Manchester United.
"Van Gaal thinks Rooney's red-card tackle was 'too unfriendly.' The man has a way with words. http://t.co/kXRZzzZfcx https://t.co/zXlB1cG1wy
— theScore (@theScore) September 28, 2014"
Rooney cynically and savagely chopped Stewart Downing on a counter-attack and received a straight red. At that point in the game, it was a huge risk given the score, and the Red Devils really did scrape by with 10 men.
Danny Welbeck's Airshot
3 of 8
Does this count as an assist?
"Así ha sido el empate de Oxlade Chamberlain. http://t.co/cRKmm5VBqC
— Arsenal FC (@ArsenalSphera) September 27, 2014"
Danny Welbeck thinks so.
Ten Rouwelaar V. Ajax
4 of 8How Not to be a Goalkeeper, by NAC Breda goalkeeper Ten Rouwelaar, is coming to book stores near you soon.
He wasn't happy with his performance against Ajax as his side lost 5-2 this weekend and rightly so; he simply stood there and watched five goals fly in.
There Was a Terrible Miss for Kaiserslautern...
5 of 8
Philipp Hoffman entered his ballot for worst miss of the 2014-15 season this weekend.
"We've already found the miss of the season ---> http://t.co/4b0QaxSe29 https://t.co/NtY19bGxsh
— Complex UK (@complex_uk) September 25, 2014"
How do you not score from there?!?
Bernardo Anor's Four-Yard Miss
6 of 8
Bernardo Anor achieved the seemingly impossible from four yards this weekend as he struck the post in front of an open goal.
"Unbelievable miss from 4 yards by Columbus Crew midfielder Bernardo Añor v Montreal Impact in #MLS last night: https://t.co/cqDo8MWL5I
— Nik Postinger (@nikpostinger) September 28, 2014"
It didn't effect the scoreline—Montreal Impact still lost by two goals to nil—but Anor is an internet sensation for all the wrong reasons regardless.
Emir Spahic's First-Half Red Card
7 of 8
Emir Spahic furthered his reputation as a red-card threat this weekend, taking just 28 minutes to receive two yellows against Freiburg.
The second tackle, shown above, was committed whilst on a yellow already, and he iced the cake by ironically clapping the referee after being shown his marching orders.
Christian Abbiati's Failed Audition
8 of 8
Christian Abbiati doesn't get many chances to impress any more, but he needs to know he'll never be a relevant Milan goalkeeper again if he makes these sorts of errors.
"Abbiati with a big mistake, Succi scores. Cesena - Milan 1-0. #cesmil https://t.co/I3zztaBEJM
— 433LIVE (@433LIVE) September 28, 2014"
He parried a Guido Marilungo shot straight to Davide Succi in the 10th minute, allowing the Italian journeyman to fire home with ease and give Cesena the lead.
That's bad keeping, Christian!
