Ranking the 10 Best Golazos from World Football This Weekend

Ryan BaileySep 28, 2014

Once again, top-flight football from around the world delivered a great quantity of high quality goals over the weekend. Several golazos in our ranking this week were "clutch" last-minute efforts, including Phil Jagielka's brilliant strike in the Merseyside derby.

"It would have been [an incredible strike] in any game," said Everton manager Roberto Martinez after the game, per Paul Wilson of The Guardian. "But as it happened to be in the last minute of this one it might just have been the best strike I’ve ever seen."

Read on to see where Jagielka's goal ranks among the weekend's finest...

10. Charlie Austin (QPR) vs. Southampton

1 of 10

Queens Park Rangers suffered their third loss of the season at St. Mary's, where they faced high-flying Southampton.

Considering their midfield injury issues, the Hoops put up an impressive fight, with Charlie Austin providing a glimmer of hope in the 66th minute with the stunning volley he set up for himself.

Alas, two minutes later, the Saints went ahead with an even more impressive goal (more on that shortly).

9. Luka Modric (Real Madrid) vs. Villarreal

2 of 10

Real Madrid climbed back into Spain's top four with a 2-0 win over Villarreal. In the 32nd minute, Luka Modric opened the scoring with a superb strike from outside the area.

Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo—whose view may have been blocked by up to four defenders—stood motionless as the powerful drive flew past him.

8. Lucas Piazon (Frankfurt) vs. Hamburg

3 of 10

Chelsea's Lucas Piazon is spending this season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, but the 20-year-old Brazilian may be earning his call-up from the Blues soon if Jose Mourinho sees him score Bobby Dazzlers like this.

Frankfurt were drawing 1-1 at Hamburg when Piazon stepped up in the 80th minute and converted a delectable free-kick for the winner.

7. Joffre Guerron (Tigres) vs. Pachuca

4 of 10

Tigres visited Pachuca in the Liga MX Apertura on Saturday evening, pulling off an impressive 3-2 win. The visitors' first goal was scored by Ecuadorian striker Joffre Guerron, who was given enough time to compose himself and unleash a fantastic left-footed strike.

6. Colin Kazim-Richards (Feyenoord) vs. Go Ahead Eagles

5 of 10

See the goal at 1:48 in the clip.

Feyenoord visited Go Ahead Eagles for the second time in three days on Saturday, managing to turn over the disappointment of a 2-0 loss in the first game with a rousing 4-0 victory.

English forward Colin Kazim-Richards scored the third goal of the match in the 58th minute, courtesy of a stunning 30-yard drive.

5. Phil Jagielka (Everton) vs. Liverpool

6 of 10

One of the less enthralling Merseyside derbies in recent years did bring two great goals. After Steven Gerrard looked to have gifted Liverpool with a critic-silencing free-kick in the 65th minute, Phil Jagielka equalised in injury time.

Dejan Lovren's half-hearted headed clearance fell to Jagielka around 25 yards out, and the Toffees captain responded with an unlikely half volley that nestled in the top-right corner.

You know it's a good weekend of goals when this one only makes No. 5 in the ranking!

4. Mattia Destro (Roma) vs. Hellas Verona

7 of 10

Roma's quest to end Juventus' dominance in Serie A is still going to plan, having earned five victories from their first five league matches.

The Giallorossi beat Verona 2-0 on Saturday, thanks in part to an audacious long-range strike from Mattia Destro. From just inside the centre circle, the Italian striker punished the goalkeeper for straying from his line with a sensational half volley.

3. Alvaro Recoba (Nacional) vs. Wanderers

8 of 10

Alvaro Recoba holds a special place in the hearts of Internazionale fans, who watched the Uruguayan dazzle in nine seasons at the San Siro.

Now 38 years old and back in his homeland at Nacional, the tricky forward showed that he's still got it in a match against Wanderers on Saturday afternoon as he scored directly from a corner.

2. Graziano Pelle (Southampton) vs. QPR

9 of 10

As previously mentioned, Southampton climbed to second place in the Premier League table on Saturday with a 2-1 win over struggling Queens Park Rangers. Graziano Pelle won it for the home side with one of the most beautiful goals of the Premier League season so far.

Just a few minutes after QPR had equalised through Charlie Austin's wonderful goal, the Italian striker teed himself up with his back to goal before looping an acrobatic overhead kick over Rob Green.

1. Tomasz Brzyski (Legia Warsaw) vs. Lech Poznan

10 of 10

This week's best golazo may encourage a "did he really mean it" discussion, but it's incredible enough to get the benefit of the doubt.

Legia Warsaw were losing their Polish Ekstraklasa tie with Lech Poznan 2-0 when defender Tomasz Brzyski picked up a square ball on the left wing in the 76th minute. The 32-year-old proceeded to blast an amazing strike over the goalkeeper from an impossible angle.

Surely, he wouldn't have put that much power on a cross?

Warsaw went on to equalise in the 90th minute, keeping them at the top of the league.
