Real Madrid romped to a 5-1 home victory over Elche on Tuesday evening thanks to four goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, and despite going a goal down to a controversial penalty.

Pedro Mosquera was kicked by Ronaldo as the Real attacker tried to clear. Edu Albacar converted from the spot but the Spanish capital club would be level five minutes later when James Rodriguez crossed for Gareth Bale to head in.

Real then won their own undeserved penalty when Marcelo disgracefully dived without being even touched. There was no contract whatsoever from the nearest placed Mosquera. Ronaldo buried his spot-kick to give the European champions the lead.

The Portuguese made it three just after the hour mark when he headed in a more legal assist from Marcelo, this one a superb cross from the left.

With a comfortable advantage Carlo Ancelotti's side eased off, pretty much until the final 10 minutes or so.

Ronaldo was fouled by the stumbling Elche substitute Mario Pasalic (on loan from Chelsea) in the box. He sealed a hat-trick with the subsequent penalty, and then added his fourth, and Real's fifth, in stoppage time when he finished from Bale's through ball.
