Nick Foles, Jeremy Maclin's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2

Tim KeeneySep 15, 2014

If you were relying on Nick Foles and Jeremy Maclin to squeak out your Week 2 matchup on Monday night, there's a good chance you finished with a notch in the win column.

It wasn't always always pretty, but when the Philadelphia Eagles walked off the field at Lucas Oil Stadium with a thrilling 30-27 comeback victory, the QB and WR had each produced valuable fantasy numbers:

Foles is difficult to judge right now. Through two games, he has now racked up 653 passing yards and three touchdowns. However, because of three turnovers in the opener (he now has two interceptions and two fumbles lost overall), he ranks a mediocre 15th among fantasy quarterbacks in standard leagues.

There is also reason to believe his yardage numbers are ballooned right now.

Philadelphia has fallen into significant first-half deficits in each of its two games, forcing Chip Kelly to go to the air more than he would like. Foles is averaging 41 throws per game through two weeks, a massive increase from the 29 he averaged in 10 starts last season.

Moreover, Darren Sproles' 152 receiving yards, most of which came via the YAC variety, made Foles' night look much better in the box score than it did to most eyeballs. ESPN's Matt Williamson and Smart Football's Chris Brown expressed concerns as he missed several throws down the field:

Still, even at his worst, he has been serviceable. An explosive offense will do that for you. Even if the pass attempts and yards eventually decrease, there is plenty of room for the efficiency to increase.

As for Maclin, he's another interesting case. He has seen an extremely healthy 22 targets through two games, and volume often breeds fantasy success. However, he has only turned those into eight catches for 142 yards. Outside of a 68-yard touchdown in which the Jacksonville defense lost him in Week 1, he's averaging just 7.4 yards per grab.

Those are underwhelming numbers, but again, Foles' inaccuracy has hurt him. There have been opportunities for several big plays down the field, but the connection just hasn't been there.

Ultimately, this is a unique situation. Philly's pass game hasn't looked in sync, but playing from behind has helped mask those problems a bit.

Right now, you simply have to hold onto both Foles and Maclin, as we haven't gotten a true look at their value yet.
