Drew Stanton's Updated Fantasy Value Following Carson Palmer's Injury

Timothy RappSep 14, 2014

It is looking as though Drew Stanton will get a shot at running Bruce Arians' offense on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals backup will be thrust into the starting role as the Arizona Cardinals announced on Sunday morning that Carson Palmer was inactive:

On Friday, Arians told Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com that he expected Palmer to play despite a "nerve thing" hampering the veteran quarterback. When asked about Palmer missing practice, he noted, "It’s been sore, but we’ve been down this road before. The best game he had last year, he didn’t practice all week.”

Apparently Palmer missing practice was indeed a sign that he wouldn't play, however.

Some folks out there are excited to see what Stanton can do given this opportunity. Consider Doug Kyed of NESN among them:

Fantasy owners, however, probably shouldn't be worried about picking up Stanton this week. While the matchup against the New York Giants is a good one and he has talented weapons in the passing game in Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and Andre Ellington, Stanton is a backup for a reason.

Put another way, if you wouldn't have started Palmer over your QB1 this week, why would you start Stanton?

You wouldn't. Stanton's insertion into the lineup shouldn't dramatically alter the fantasy output of the other players on the team, but starting Stanton himself would be a risk unwise to take.

For Palmer owners thinking long term, though, Stanton is at least a name to monitor now as a potential QB2 depending on his performance and Palmer's outlook moving forward.

Hit me up on Twitter—I'll answer your fantasy questions and make some corny jokes too. It's more fun than karate class with Antonio Brown.
