10 Questions with Bleacher Report's Stan Collymore

Former Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore had quite the career as a player.

His new life as a broadcaster has kept him close to the game and brought a fresh perspective on everything that comes with it.

For this week's Thursday column, we asked Stan to answer 10 questions about his life in football.

Favourite Ground?

My favourite ground has to be Manchester United's Old Traffford. I scored in a victory to end United's year-long unbeaten home record there in the mid-1990s, against the likes of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister—Sir Alex Ferguson's team at their peak.

I also won an FA Cup semi-final there for Liverpool against Aston Villa. The atmosphere is amazing. It really is the theatre of dreams. 

Best Game You Played In?

Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle was an incredible game. We had two sides chasing the title, and I scored with virtually the last kick of the game in front of The Kop.

Best Game You've Watched?

It would have to be Brazil 1-7 Germany at the World Cup. I was commentating on the match, and I never expected to see what I saw that day.

Fans were openly sobbing at the ground. It was a display of absolute ruthlessness from Germany.

Best Goal You Scored?

It was for Aston Villa against Atletico Madrid in the 1997 UEFA Cup quarter-final. I was 25 yards out, and I hit a thunderbolt into the postage stamp at the Holt End. 

Best Goal You've Seen?

Would have to be Marco van Basten for Holland vs. Russia in 1988. The ball driven from the left, he's virtually level with the goal, but catches it so sweetly on the volley.

Equal to that was a Van Basten overhead kick for Ajax in the Eredivisie. It was perfect. 

Hardest Opponent You Faced?

Martin Keown. I always did well against Arsenal, but he used to punch, growl and do everything possible to make it hard for you.

It was before the rule changes back then, and he'd take your legs out from behind, and you'd be on your back the first chance he had in a game. 

Easiest Opponents Faced?

Bruce and Pallister were two of the best central defenders Manchester United have had, but I used to score virtually every time we played against them.

It's a weird one, because they were both exceptional players. 

Funniest Men in Football?

Mark Dennis

Mark Dennis was extremely funny. He once feigned a heart attack at Brighton just because he didn't want to play in the reserves.

Dean Saunders used to do every voice you could think of—he could do all the impressions.

Steve Harrison at Villa was also very funny. I remember he stopped our bus at a red light once, and left it there for ages while he went and did some shopping. 

Best Player You've Played With?

Bryan Roy almost invented the No. 10 role in the Premier League. He played in the pocket behind me, with aplomb, and scored goals.

Another to mention is Robbie Fowler. He was a Rolls Royce of a finisher—could shoot with so little backlift.

Best Player You've Played Against?

The original Ronaldo. He played for Brazil against England at Wembley, in a game we lost 3-1, and was brilliant.
