Divock Origi to Liverpool: Latest Transfer Details, Comments and Reaction
Liverpool have completed the signing of Lille forward Divock Origi on a five-year deal, with the 19-year-old immediately joining back up with the Ligue 1 giants on loan for the 2014-15 season.
James Carroll announced the deal through the Reds' official club website, where the youngster voices his delight in having wrapped up a summer switch to Anfield:
"I am very, very happy and delighted a club as big as Liverpool showed interest in me. I'm very excited.
I know it's a club with a great history, great fans and a lot of great players. For me, Liverpool is one of the greatest clubs in the world and I'm very excited to be part of this great history.
"
Origi becomes Liverpool's sixth signing of the transfer window, Brendan Rodgers having already recruited Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert to his cause.
Ben Smith of BBC Sport states an admiration for the English giant's show of business strategy in agreeing the deal prior to the 2014 World Cup, thought to be in the region of £10 million:
It was in Brazil that Origi enhanced his reputation even further, starring for Belgium in several matches as they made their run to the tournament's quarter-finals. WhoScored.com breaks down his numbers:
In sending the forward back to his former club, the Merseysiders are also continuing to cast an eye toward the future, with Luis Alberto and Andre Wisdom having already been farmed out to Malaga and West Brom, respectively.
Despite his age, Origi has been a powerful force in the French top flight of late, as Squawka indicates through his impressive attacking record last season:
In time, Liverpool may hope that Origi will play his part in softening the blow suffered by the departure of Luis Suarez, but any immediate void will need to be filled by the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Lambert.
For now, however, Rodgers will continue to watch his latest acquisition's progress in Ligue 1 with an even keener eye. The Anfield faithful will be undoubtedly eager to see the talent they'll be getting their hands on in time for the 2015-16 campaign.
