Why Rod Laver Is The Best Tennis Player Ever

Adam HartJun 28, 2009

What?

Pete Sampras or Roger Federer aren't the best tennis players ever?

No way! In 1960, before the open era, Rod Laver won the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam title. He followed that up with a win at Wimbledon in 1961, giving him a spot in the 1962 final.

But, in all the other tournaments, he had to earn his win. In 1962, he completed the Grand Slam, and his title total was up to six, already the most ever.

Unlike some of the other tennis players, the open era wouldn't of made a very big difference in his accomplishments.

He played in a time when his game was very unseen. He really changed the game of tennis from A to Z. Can you really be better than somebody at something they created? Not really, since they are the first they know how it works. When the open era began, former professionals couldn't play.

So, in 1968 , when Laver returned to tennis, in the open era, how won Wimbledon again! Then, in 1969, he won all four Grand Slams again. Amazing!

He retired in 1978 with 11 grand Slam Titles under his belt. In 2000, the centre court in Melbourne park was renamed Rod Laver Arena.

Say whatever you want, but Laver is the best tennis player ever!
