Tyron Johnson to LSU: Tigers Land 5-Star WR Prospect
LSU has received a major boost to its receiving corps as 5-star wideout Tyron Johnson has announced his commitment to the Tigers.
Mike Farrell of Rivals.com has the report:
Johnson is the No. 2 wideout in the 2015 class, No. 21 overall prospect and No. 1 recruit from the state of Louisiana after playing high school ball at Warren Easton, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He stands at 6'1" and 191 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds.
There's a reason Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Texas A&M and a host of others offered Johnson scholarships and put extensive time and resources into his recruitment.
While Johnson isn't the biggest target, he's surprisingly compact and fast for his frame. He creates good separation and has the ability to score anywhere on the field once he gets the ball in his hands—which is something else he does with superb technique.
Johnson has been hard at work showcasing his skills, which has led to moments such as his fending off some of the top corners from his class:
His camp tour created plenty of highlight-worthy moments:
Johnson is more than ready for the next level, especially after he got a taste of the grand scope of the game as an attendee of last year's Alabama-Texas A&M heavyweight bout, as captured by ESPN.com's Gerry Hamilton (subscription required):
"It was an amazing game," Johnson said. "College football is the place to be! I never saw anything like that in my life. I mean, I saw games on TV, but to be there is different! The atmosphere was unbelievable!"
Now, Johnson will be a direct part of that kind of electric atmosphere.
The scouting notes from ESPN Insider (subscription required) tell the story on Johnson in a succinct manner:
"Johnson will be a highly coveted prospect because he possesses ideal measurables and can run for a bigger player. He has some dynamic playmaking traits and works to get open. Plays with enthusiasm and can also contribute as a return specialist. He is a versatile prospect that is only going to get better as a route runner. He's a high end player for top level programs.
"
Suffice it to say, Johnson is set to have an impact right away if the coaching staff allows. He's a college-ready talent with room to grow physically and technically. He's a name every collegiate fan should watch from here on out.
He's already an above-average route-runner and has reliable hands, but there's no doubt his biggest strength right now is his explosiveness and athleticism. He should have no trouble making the transition to the college game based on those factors alone.
Once he's able to refine his skills away from the ball, there's no telling how high his ceiling could be.
