Sunday’s Best Matchup: No. 1 Arizona vs. No. 8 Gonzaga
There are plenty of great games to watch during the culmination of the third round, but the matchup between the No. 1-seeded Arizona Wildcats (31-4, 15-3 Pac-12) and the No. 8-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs (29-6, 15-3 WCC) will steal the show.
Arizona has been put on upset alert.
Despite the defensive presence of the Wildcats, the Bulldogs have just as much size, speed and strength as their opponents and will not be intimated by the No. 1 seed. This is a Gonzaga team with senior leadership and tournament experience.
As columnist Sigmund Bloom reminded us, this is not the first time these two teams have met, with the battle in 2003 regarded as one of the most exciting games in tournament history:
Bulldogs guard Gary Bell told Stefanie Loh of U-T San Diego about the team’s familiarity with Arizona and its overall mindset:
"I don’t think they’re overlooking us. Two years ago, we played them and beat them, so I think they’re definitely going to be ready for us. Me, Kevin (Pagnos) and Sam (Dower) all played in that game, so they definitely have their eyes open for us. We’re aggressive and we’re going to come out and play tomorrow.
"
Arizona has made its living this season on the glass. After racking up an impressive 38.9 rebounds per game (18th in the nation), the Wildcats will attack Gonzaga down low and battle for every loose ball on the court.
While a victory over Weber State in the first round was what Arizona needed to advance to the next round, the team wasn’t overly impressive and didn’t gain much momentum in the victory.
On the other hand, the Bulldogs used their consistency and efficiency—Gonzaga’s .498 field-goal percentage ranked the team fifth in the nation—to knock off a tough Oklahoma State program and earn a spot in the next round.
This matchup has potential upset written all over it.
Predicted Final Score: Gonzaga 76, Arizona 71
