Alan Pardew fails to use his head

Apologies for the terrible pun. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew watched his team cruise to a comfortable win over Hull City, yet somehow felt the need to head-butt Tigers midfielder David Meyler.

No, we're not making this up. His team was up big, and he head-butted someone.

Gary Lineker probably said it best:

While Pardew did seem to react to an apparent shove by Meyler, any form of violent conduct between a coach and a player is inexcusable. Pardew was sent to the stands and immediately realised what a colossal mistake he made.

It didn't take long for the Magpies boss to apologise, per BBC.com:

"

I apologise to everyone. I should not have got involved in it

Of course, I'm not stupid enough to accept there's going to be no punishment. I'll have to accept whatever comes my way.

I will sit down from now on and send [assistant manager] John Carver out there.

The players were terrific; it was only myself who had a poor performance all-round. I am very, very pleased with the team but very upset with myself.

"

In a strange turn of events however, the manager did downplay the incident, saying: "I don't think it was a headbutt. It wasn't a motion that was quick."

Gary Lineker confirmed the FA are looking into the matter:

One can only assume Newcastle will be without their manager for a significant amount of time, as Pardew can expect a lengthy ban for his actions Saturday.

Arsenal lose ground on Chelsea in title race

In what is sadly becoming one of the most predictable storylines around the EPL, Arsenal's loss at the hand of Stoke City combined with Chelsea's win over rivals Fulham has given the Blues a bit of breathing space atop the EPL table. And with Liverpool's victory over Southampton later in the evening, Arsenal suddenly find themselves in third place.

STOKE ON TRENT, ENGLAND - MARCH 01: Wojciech Szczesny and Olivier Giroud of Arsenal collect the ball from the back of the net after jonathan Walters scores a penalty during the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Arsenal at Britannia Sta

Stoke came out to play at the Britannia Stadium, taking the game right to the visitors and frustrating the Gunners with a compact organisation and strong play on the wings.

But while the home side had the upper hand for most of the game and were able to muster a handful of chances, the only goal of the tie would come in controversial fashion as Stoke were awarded a penalty for a Laurent Koscielny hand ball. And while the contact was definitely there, questions will be asked over the players intent in handling the ball.

Sky Sports reported Arsene Wenger surely felt it wasn't a penalty:

But while the debate over the penalty will most likely rage on, the fact remains that with an EPL title on the line, Arsenal lost to a team that, on paper, they had no business losing to. And for a club that has built a reputation for underwhelming when the chips are down, this game writes yet another chapter in the Gunners' recent troubled history.

This one fan seems to be fearing the worst:

Arsenal will have to recover from this setback fast, as the upcoming schedule doesn't look particularly inviting:

Fulham are in deep trouble

When you're sitting at the bottom of the table, losing to the league leaders is expected. And even if those league leaders are your neighbouring team, it's still nothing to be ashamed of.

But the body language of Fulham's players said it all. After a solid first half from the home side, Chelsea took over the game and gained a comfortable win over a team that never seemed to believe in a result to begin with.

Fulham coach Felix Magath spoke with Sky Sports after the game and acknowledged he was worried about his team's morale:

"If you take over a team who have not won for weeks they are losing confidence. We started very well and we fight very well against Chelsea but after they get one goal you don't have the morale to come back."

The writing has been on the wall for some time now for Fulham, and so far the boatload of players signed in the January transfer window don't seem to be helping the team's cause. Kostas Mitroglou in particular is yet to have any sort of impact on his new club and wasn't even on the bench for the game.

Goal's Liam Twomey is hearing Magath still doesn't believe Mitroglou is ready for the EPL:

With a clash against fellow bottom feeders Cardiff City on tap, Fulham better hope the Greek striker finds his form as Fulham will need all three points if the team is to have any hope of avoiding relegation.
