EPL Results Week 21: Most Surprising Scores and Key Outcomes

Timothy RappJan 11, 2014

The Premier League never disappoints. Each week, we're treated to epic matchups, bizarre results and more than a few memorable goals.

Week 21 was no exception.

While the top teams generally avoided one another this week, there were still plenty of big results across the list of fixtures. Before we break down the key outcomes any further, however, here are this week's results:

Manchester United2-0Swansea City

The biggest result was surely Sunderland's 4-1 drubbing of Fulham, which further condensed the teams in or around the relegation zone. Adam Johnson was the hero in this one, tallying a hat trick and giving Sunderland their third straight win in all competitions.

Gus Poyet's men are starting to play with some confidence.

West Ham also came up with a big result near the bottom of the table, defeating Cardiff City 2-0 despite being down a man for the last 20 minutes of the game. Andy Carroll made his return to the team, coming off the bench, while Carlton Cole and Mark Noble found the back of the net for the Hammers.

Tottenham beat Crystal Palace, 2-0, a big result for their top-four push, though the game was much closer than the score suggested. Palace was the better team over the first 45 and should have had the game's first goal, but Jason Puncheon completely botched a penalty attempt.

Christian Eriksen and soon-to-be Toronto FC man Jermain Defoe tallied for Spurs in the second half, giving them a win in a game in which they came out a bit flat in but recovered nicely to earn the three points.

Chelsea and Everton also won, 2-0, in games they were expected to handle. No shockers there. Chelsea did put pressure on Arsenal and Manchester City with the win, however, as the Blues now jump to the top of the Premier League table.

Southampton's 1-0 win over West Brom was important for a club that had won just one of its past nine Premier League games. Adam Lallana was the hero in this one, as his 66th minute tally was all that the Saints required.

That's now five goals and five assists for Lallana, who has an excellent 7.27 average match rating on the season, according to WhoScored.com.

Sunday's action features two excellent contests, as the unpredictable Newcastle host the always dangerous Man City, while Stoke City welcome Liverpool to the Britannia Stadium, where the Potters have lost just once on the season.

Then on Monday, Aston Villa host Arsenal. The Gunners will be looking for revenge, as Villa won the opening match of the season between the teams.
