Emmanuel Adebayor Injury: Updates on Tottenham Star's Status and Return

Steven CookJan 1, 2014

Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in the 70th minute of Spurs' 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Jan. 1.

The Premier League's Twitter account initially reported the news:

"

Interim manager Tim Sherwood was vague on the injury during his postgame presser, per BBC's Oluwashina Okeleji:

"

Tim Sherwood: "We really dug in. At the moment [Emmanuel Adebayor] has ice on every part of his body so we can't tell what's wrong wit him."

— Oluwashina Okeleji (@oluwashina) January 1, 2014"

Before leaving the pitch, Adebayor made his mark on the match with a 34th-minute goal to open up the scoring. He converted a cross from Christian Eriksen to give his side the all-important road lead.

Adebayor has emerged as a huge impact player in recent weeks ever since Sherwood's arrival. He scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Southampton on Dec. 22 before netting his third of the season in the United victory.

However, he rode the bench for the early stretches of the season as he made his 2013-14 league debut on Nov. 24 and has only made five Premier League appearances all season long.

Soon after he started being featured in two-striker sets along with Roberto Soldado, he suffered a minor setback injury when he hurt his groin and was kept out two weeks.

The 29-year-old has been with Tottenham since arriving in a season-long loan in August 2011. After finishing the season as the club's top goalscorer, he signed a permanent deal with Spurs a year later.
