Transfer Rumour Rater: Martin Montoya to Liverpool in the January Window

BR-UK StaffNov 29, 2013

With Jose Enrique sidelined until early 2014, Brendan Rodgers is reportedly looking to invest in the talents of Barcelona starlet Martin Montoya.

That's according to Andy Hunter of the Guardian, who goes on to explain that the Reds' managing director Ian Ayre has already flown to Catalan country in an effort to thrash out a deal.

An excerpt from Hunter's report reads:

"Montoya's opportunities have been restricted at Camp Nou by the excellence of the right-back Dani Alves but talks have taken place over a contract renewal. That has not deterred Liverpool, however, and their managing director, Ian Ayre, met Barcelona officials in Catalunya on Thursday to discuss a possible transfer fee."

As things stand, Montoya's current deal at the Camp Nou is set to expire next summer, and so the 22-year-old would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement in the new year before then moving to Merseyside as a free transfer in the summer.

Alternatively, Rodgers' side could hope to tie up a cash deal this January, but it's as of yet unknown if Barca would be willing to settle for that kind of deal, never mind how much it would cost.

Is Montoya the kind of player Liverpool should be hunting or have they got enough cover at left-back?
