Analysing Jack Wilshere's Performance vs. Marseille

Tim KeeneyNov 26, 2013

Entering the day tied with Napoli and just three points clear of Borussia Dortmund in Group F, Arsenal couldn't afford anything but three points against bottom-dwellers Marseille.

Jack Wilshere made sure the Gunners had nothing to worry about.

The 21-year-old Englishman put on an absolute show at the Emirates on Tuesday, as he scored a beautiful goal 30 seconds in, added his second in the 65th minute and was outstanding for nearly every moment in between as the Gunners cruised to a 2-0 win.

As ESPN's Paul Carr pointed out, it was the first brace for Wilshere at this level:

Arsenal put together a lovely buildup in the back just seconds after the opening kickoff, and Bacary Sagna eventually freed up the youngster down the sideline, where he sprinted into the box, cut inside a defender and curled his attempt into the top corner of the net:

That gorgeous goal seemingly gave Wilshere the confidence he needed, because he proceeded to make a positive impact all over the pitch thereafter.

According to WhoScored.com, he completed 81 percent of his deliveries and was second on the squad with three key passes, behind only Mesut Ozil. Working down the right side as well as the middle of the pitch, he was constantly finding space, linking with the rest of the midfield and putting himself in dangerous situations.

As the Gunners' official Twitter feed shared, he was also willing to track back and make timely tackles:

Wilshere's second goal was the result of some team magic, as Aaron Ramsey threaded the needle to Ozil in the penalty area, who delivered the low cross to Wilshere for the simple finish:

That right there epitomizes the danger Arsenal can present for defenses.

Ramsey and Ozil's transcendence in the midfield has been a major reason for the Gunners' tremendous start to the season, and if Wilshere continues to connect with them and play like he did on Tuesday, that only adds another element.

Wilshere still has a way to go to fulfill his massive potential, but he took a significant step in the right direction with his most productive performance in an Arsenal shirt.
