20 Best La Liga Gifs so Far This Season
It seems as though the La Liga season just kicked off yesterday. It doesn’t feel like a third of the season has already passed, but it has.
This year, the Spanish league has been full of action. From glorious goals to agonizing heartbreak, fans have seen it all.
With the international break coming to a close and club matches picking back up this weekend, we thought it was time to look back at some of the biggest moments of the season until this point.
In this article, we will look at the 20 best gifs from La Liga so far. They are in no specific order, but please feel free to tell us which ones you think are best in the comments below!
David Villa's Vicious Volley
1 of 21
In his first match facing his former club, David Villa volleyed home a slicing effort to give Atletico Madrid an early lead over Barcelona. The celebration was a sight to behold, but nobody saw this goal coming.
In any case, it was certainly an unbelievable way to get his Atletico Madrid career started.
Now that is a finish from Spain's all-time top scorer.
Neymar's Trophy Header
2 of 21
Atletico's lead would be short-lived.
Neymar nodded home the goal that would end up winning the Spanish Supercopa for Barcelona and quickly stole the hearts of Blaugrana fans across the planet.
Barcelona seemed beaten at this point and a goal looked impossible. Neymar then rose up and silenced the entire crowd. Welcome to Europe.
Godin Targets Messi
3 of 21
Diego Godin was spotted seemingly telling a teammate to target Lionel Messi's sore hamstring in a shocking moment during the Spanish Supercopa.
No one knows if he had something malicious in mind, but this certainly didn't look good for the defender.
Messi had been suffering from problems with his hamstring. Godin could have just been telling his teammates to force Messi to his bad side, but this gif makes it look a lot worse.
Suso's Backheel Beauty
4 of 21
Liverpool loanee Suso has dazzled this season with Almeria. One of his more flashy moments came when the youngster pulled off this unbelievable backheel flick pass during open play.
He doesn't settle the ball. He catches it while it's bouncing and chips a defender in the process. You have to have some major confidence to even attempt something like this. We will see Suso again later.
Perotti's Screamer
5 of 21
There are some goals that just leave you speechless.
Diego Perotti's rocket against Atletico tied the game up for Sevilla, but it also sent the crowd into a frenzy. Everyone was caught off-guard by this goal. Even Perotti looked surprised when it hit the back of the net!
The best part of this is watching the crowd behind the goal. Everyone slowly starts leaning in as the ball approaches, and then they lose it when it ripples the net. Passion is a beautiful thing.
Alonso Nutmegs Zidane
6 of 21
Not many players can say they have nutmegged Zinedine Zidane. Then again, not many players can say they were at the level of Xabi Alonso.
It may have happened in practice, but it's still fun to watch.
I love this because of what Zidane does when it happens. He freezes and turns back to look at Alonso. Even the great Zizou was stunned!
Ronaldo's Amazing Run
7 of 21
What else can be said about this goal?
Cristiano Ronaldo goes full speed after tapping the ball through the defenders leg. He rounds the defense and finishes from a very tight angle.
This stands out as one of the most exciting goals of the year, but for Ronaldo it was just another day at the office.
Bale's First Goal
8 of 21
The world's most expensive player did not take long to score his first goal with Real Madrid.
The strike came against Villarreal and was very important. However, Gareth Bale probably wishes the outcome would have been better.
It may not have been the wonderful type of goal fans are used to seeing from Bale, but it was an important step towards starting his career with Real Madrid.
Messi's Goal Against Sevilla
9 of 21
This goal was textbook Barcelona.
The passing was beautiful to set up the chance and Messi knew exactly where he was supposed to be in order to get his best look at goal.
The keeper really had no chance here and the defense was completely picked apart. This is what Barcelona is capable of doing against almost any team. It's scary.
Costa's Goal Against Real Madrid
10 of 21
Madridistas may want to look away—this goal by Diego Costa gave Atletico Madrid the win over Real Madrid in their first meeting of the season, and they have never looked back.
Costa has quickly turned into one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, and the boys in white were both witnesses and victims of that fact when this happened.
Courtois Rolls Around
11 of 21
Madridistas, you can look again.
What a shame this was.
In the final minutes of the Madrid derby, Thibaut Courtois was "kicked" by Gareth Bale and proceeded to do this.
I'm not sure if his own teammates believed it or not, but it was remarkable acting. He was likely trying to kill off the game, but he's also too good of a player to do this.
Neymar Wants to Play
12 of 21
Neymar was not immediately handed a starting spot for Barcelona. He had to earn his way into the XI, but everyone would understand if he was impatient.
In the early part of the season, the Brazilian was caught pleading with the camera for a substitution. It shows his desire to get on the field and this gif quickly made its way around the internet.
Xabi Prieto's Stunner
13 of 21
How Xabi Prieto was able to score this goal is beyond me. The Basque midfielder blasted the ball from a very tight angle and was somehow able to put it past Courtois.
Of course, Real Sociedad did not win this game. Despite the result, though, Prieto will remember scoring this goal for the rest of his life.
Suso Dazzles Against Barcelona
14 of 21
I told you we would see Suso again.
This time, the Spanish attacker is dribbling his way through the Barcelona defense and nobody has an answer for him.
Barcelona is always the team sporting the fancy footwork, but this time Suso shows up everyone. Don't watch it just once, it gets better every time.
Messi's Backheel That Wasn't
15 of 21
Though this took place in the Champions League, I still think it deserves to be here.
While the goal was disallowed because Messi was clearly offside, this was still an extremely impressive feat.
He actually beat the keeper with this beautiful roulette backheel shot.
The keeper dives for it as every player just stops to watch. It seems like Messi was the only one that realized it wasn't going to count.
It may not have been a goal, but this is something to appreciate.
Neymar's Clasico Goal
16 of 21
You won't find many goals better than this.
Neymar made a statement in his first ever Clasico, finishing off this wonderful move to give Barcelona the 1-0 lead.
The Brazilian showed just how good he is. The control was perfect, his movement created space and the shot was perfectly placed from a tight angle. This is simply a thing of beauty.
Ronaldo Calls for a Penalty
17 of 21
El Clasico was full of drama like always, and Cristiano Ronaldo is likely still complaining about the fact he wasn't awarded a penalty when Javier Mascherano took him down in the box.
The Real Madrid man was fuming, and I understand why. In my opinion, it was a clear penalty, and I would have been just as livid as he was.
Dani Alves Nutmegs Ronaldo
18 of 21
To add insult to injury, Ronaldo also got a taste of his own dribbling medicine in El Clasico. Dani Alves joined the attack for Barcelona and was able to tap the ball through Ronaldo's legs and break into the box.
You can see just how angry Ronaldo is about it and he proceeds to chase down the Brazilian. It just wasn't Ronaldo's night.
Alexis Sanchez Chips Diego Lopez
19 of 21
This is a goal that has already been immortalized.
Alexis Sanchez brilliantly chipped Diego Lopez from a long way out to double Barcelona's lead in El Clasico and send the fans into a frenzy.
I had to watch the goal several times myself to get the full effect. Why Sanchez ever thought taking the shot was a good idea, I will never know.
It seems he knew something I didn't. What a goal!
Ronaldo Sends a Message
20 of 21
In all honesty, this is my favorite gif of the entire season.
After scoring against Sevilla, Cristiano Ronaldo takes the time to salute. It was clearly a gesture directed towards FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who angered Ronaldo a few days before with some questionable comments.
It seems as though Ronaldo got the last laugh, in any case, and made Blatter look really bad in the end. This gif perfectly shows how much pride Ronaldo has in what he does.
A Special Treat
21 of 21I decided to leave you with a special treat, and my favorite moment and game of the La Liga season.
Too much happens in this match to show all the clips, so I've left you with the entire recap video.
The new San Mames opened earlier this season for Athletic Bilbao and is already a thing of beauty. When it is finally completed, it will be one of the best stadiums around.
Celta Vigo had the honor of being the first club to visit the stadium and the inaugural match proved to be one for the ages. Charles scored the first goal ever in the new stadium, but Athletic Club fought back to eventually win it 3-2.
It was the beginning of a new era for Los Leones and the perfect way to end this article.
Which gif was your favorite? Should anything be added? What was your favorite moment of the La Liga season so far? Leave your thoughts and comments below!
