Biggest Shifts in Standings
Stanford Falls from No. 4 to No. 9
One week removed from dominating then-No. 2 Oregon for three and a half quarters, no one-loss team was ranked higher than the Stanford Cardinal heading into a road contest against USC that few expected them to falter in.
Saturday further proved that nothing is ever certain in college football.
The Lane Kiffin-less Trojans, now having won five of six since Ed Orgeron took over as interim head coach, kicked a last-second field goal to top the Cardinal as thousands of USC fans rushed the field.
It hasn't been a recent stretch to remember for USC, but they'll take solace in knowing they majorly shook up the BCS picture despite their struggles. Meanwhile, Stanford gave up incredible position at potentially getting back into the national title picture and now is suddenly trailing Oregon again in the Pac-12 North.
Auburn Climbs 1 Spot After Miracle Win
In the midst of a surprisingly incredible season, the Auburn Tigers entered the final stretch of the season with two tough home tests.
They took care of business early against Georgia, but Aaron Murray heroics got the Bulldogs the lead with just under two minutes left. Once leading the game by 17, the Tigers were caught looking ahead to next week's Iron Bowl.
A Nick Marshall miracle Hail Mary on 4th-and-long, which tipped off multiple Bulldogs and fell into the hands of Tigers wide receiver Ricardo Louis, kept Auburn's national title hopes alive.
After Stanford's slip-up, Auburn was able to gain a spot despite coming within one fateful play of losing tons of ground and giving up SEC, and BCS, title aspirations.
Oregon Gets Back into Top 5
Stanford fought to knock Oregon off of the ranks of the unbeaten, but didn't fight enough to keep the Ducks from the top five and keep its hopes of a Pac-12 championship alive.
After the Cardinal's upset to USC, Oregon took Stanford's spot inside the top five and consequentially controls its own destiny in the Pac-12 North after a win over Utah.
A couple of bad results would have to come from the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Baylor and/or Ohio State, but don't count out the Ducks' chances of clawing back into national title contention.
Oregon sure didn't look the part of a national championship team last weekend against Stanford, but Stanford may end up being one if a few dominoes to fall in the Ducks' favor.
