Adrian Lopez Reportedly at Centre of Transfer Battle Between Liverpool and Roma

Brendan Rodgers' hunt for a new striking option has turned in the direction of Atletico striker Adrian Lopez, according to reports on talkSPORT.

The suggestion is that—with doubts over the future of Luis Suarez, coupled with the fact Iago Aspas has made little impact in England—the club are keen on finding a striking reinforcement in the next window.

Adrian is currently struggling for playing time at Atletico Madrid and the Spain international is in Rodgers' plans, according to the talkSPORT report:

Liverpool are battling it out with Roma to sign Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez, according to sources in Spain.

Roma boss Rudi Garcia, whose side sit atop Serie A following a sensational start to the season, wants to bolster his attacking options in the January transfer window.

He is believed to have lined up a move for out-of-favour Adrian, who is currently behind Diego Costa and David Villa in Diego Simeone’s forward pecking order this term.

Links between Adrian and Premier League clubs are no new phenomenon. Indeed, the striker was linked to both Arsenal and Southampton ahead of the summer window by the Daily Express' Charles Perrin.

A pacey forward option, Adrian can play a number of attacking roles, which will appeal to Rodgers in his quest for a flexible attacking unit.

Given that the 25-year-old has played a big part in Atletico's rise in recent years—including the Europa League triumph of 2012—he would certainly arrive with greater pedigree than Aspas, albeit without an outstanding scoring record.

He did, though, score on 11 occasions in the club's continental trophy win and has a fine record at youth team level with his national side. At club level, he has often had to sacrifice his personal goalscoring tally for the team, frequently playing from wide roles.

Roma, who are currently flying in Serie A, will be formidable opponents for his signature. With the sales of Marquinhos and Erik Lamela having brought in huge revenue this summer, there is money available for signings if required.

Liverpool, though, will be an attractive prospect if they can maintain their current league position until January. With Rodgers also having money available for a big purchase—proven by their failed attempt to sign Willian in the summer—the Reds will not be worried about taking on Roma for Adrian's signature.
