Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria Reportedly Scouted by Manchester United

Ben BlackmoreJun 8, 2018

David Moyes remains dissatisfied with his Manchester United midfield options and views Real Madrid as a source of two potential additions.

The United boss sent chief wingman Phil Neville to observe the Spanish club’s recent 7-3 win over Sevilla, with the primary aim of scouting Sami Khedira according to the Daily Mirror’s David McDonnell:

"

Manchester United are weighing up a £35million January move for Real Madrid's Sami Khedira.

Champions United are keeping tabs on the Germany international, as manager David Moyes plans to strengthen his midfield options in January.

Moyes sent assistant coach Phil Neville to watch Khedira in action in the Bernabeu side's thrilling 7-3 home win over Sevilla last week.

However, Khedira was not the only man on Neville’s radar. Angel Di Maria is also viewed as an option for United’s wide areas, where currently there is reliance upon teenager Adnan Januzaj, reports Jeremy Cross of the Daily Star:

"

United are also monitoring Real winger Angel Di Maria, but Khedira tops their wanted list.

The champions made a late but unsuccessful enquiry for Khedira in the last transfer window.

"

The two Madrid players were actually involved in the same substitution against Sevilla, with Di Maria replacing Khedira for the last eight minutes of the contest. They played their part in a 10-goal thriller, although Neville may not have been totally convinced by what he witnessed.

The aim of adding a player like Khedira would be to give United more strength and discipline in midfield, yet Sevilla waltzed through Madrid at the Bernabeu, scoring three times and attempting 16 shots at goal, per ESPN FC.

Khedira committed two fouls in the contest, earning a booking for one of them, but did get forward to offer one shot at goal.

The Germany international would undoubtedly improve on what United currently have, with Michael Carrick still in need of a quality partner as the ill-disciplined Marouane Fellaini struggles to settle at Old Trafford.

However, for the quoted £35 million fee, there are arguably better—more complete—midfielders around, capable of opening up opposition defences. The silky yet deceivingly combative Ander Herrera, as well as Koke, would represent better purchases. Both have previously been linked to the Red Devils, per ESPN.

Khedira might also prefer a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, per Jack Wilson of the Daily Star.

Di Maria had little time to impress against Sevilla and will likely find that to be the case for most the season now that Gareth Bale has recovered his fitness in Spain.

His potential competition at United—Nani, Shinji Kagawa and Antonio Valencia—have contributed one goal and one assist between them this term, loading responsibility on the young figure of Januzaj.

Di Maria has the technical ability and pace to prove a real star in the Premier League and would surely revel in the direct style of English football. Like Nani, he can make poor decisions and shoots more often than he should, but his capture would be a coup for Moyes if he can lure him to United.
