Nebraska vs. Michigan: Top NFL Draft Prospects to Watch
Many a famous NFL star has first made his bones by dominating the college ranks at Nebraska and Michigan, and there are a few players set to take the field on Saturday with a chance to do the same when these two proud schools go head-to-head.
Michigan enters the game having endured a brutal 29-6 beating last weekend by rival Michigan State, which incredibly held the Wolverines to negative rushing yards on the day.
Heading into the final weeks of the season, Michigan has a 6-2 record but a 2-2 record in the Big Ten.
Nebraska bounced back from its recent loss to Minnesota by beating Northwestern 27-24 last weekend.
The Cornhuskers also carry a 6-2 record into this contest, but with just one loss in the Big Ten this team has a chance to take the top spot in the Legends half of the conference with a win Saturday and another against Michigan State in two week's time.
Both teams can put up points in bunches, and the game should be nothing if not entertaining. Here's a look at the players taking the field on Saturday with the best chance of making a career out of this football thing at the next level.
Note: For the sake of this article, Devin Gardner and Devin Funchess are presumed to be staying in school until 2015.
Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan (Projected Top-10 Pick)
Taylor Lewan would likely have been a top-10 pick of the 2013 NFL draft if he'd chosen to come out last year. He hasn't hurt his stock this season, however, anchoring Michigan's offensive line from his left tackle position.
Lewan was recently named as one of 12 finalists for the Lombardi award, which honors the nation's top lineman, as noted by Big Ten Football:
He got into a bit of hot water when he twisted and pulled off the facemask of Spartans safety Isaiah Lewis last Saturday. He's since apologized for his egregious error, and his apology was accepted, as noted by Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News.
Michigan's offense is predicated on a power-rushing attack, and Lewan is an excellent run-blocker who often gets to the second level to clear a path for big gains.
Quincy Enunwa, WR, Nebraska (Projected Sixth-Round Pick)
Nebraska features a run-first offense and a quarterback who is better with the ball in his hands than when he's trying to distribute it to his teammates.
Therefore, it's been hard for Quincy Enunwa to distinguish himself as a legitimate pro prospect at the receiver position. He caught 42 passes for 470 yards and one touchdown last year as a sophomore, and he's caught 34 passes for 467 yards and eight touchdowns this year.
As noted by Nebraska on Twitter, his eight touchdowns mark the fourth-highest total for a single season in school history:
At 6'2" and 225 pounds, Enunwa has the size NFL teams love, and his proven production cannot be denied.
Fitzgerald Toussaint, RB, Michigan (Projected Sixth-Round Pick)
Running backs are a dime a dozen in the NFL, and it seems like teams are becoming more and more comfortable with trying to pick one up in the latter rounds of the NFL draft rather than spend a higher pick.
Fitz Toussaint isn't a track star, and he's not a home-run threat like Chris Johnson, but he's an excellent running back between the tackles with good vision. Unfortunately, he's also experienced injury issues throughout his career at Michigan, which shows up as a red flag on his scouting reports.
This season, Toussaint has rushed for 595 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games, adding another 93 yards on seven receptions.
He's coming off his worst performance of the season against Michigan State last weekend, when he rushed for just 20 yards on eight carries. He'll be highly motivated to put that poor effort behind him this Saturday night, and he'll have a lot to say about whether Michigan wins or loses the game.
