Premier League Weekend in 20 Pictures

Laura GreeneOct 28, 2013

The Premier League weekend kicked off with a 2-0 win that saw Arsenal and Crystal Palace assume their respective positions at the top and bottom of the table.

It was a good weekend for Merseyside teams as Romelu Lukaku was in a starring role for Everton at Villa Park while Luis Suarez stole the show at Anfield where Liverpool thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1.

David Moyes' blushes were spared at Old Trafford as Manchester United twice came from behind to beat Stoke. Norwich and Cardiff shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw, while Southampton remained unbeaten at home, thanks to their impenetrable defence and goals from Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez.

Sunday saw struggling Sunderland get a much-needed victory in a raucous derby against Newcastle United, whereas Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City saw three points and Fernando Torres slip through their grasp at Stamford Bridge.

Swansea and West Ham braved the torrential rain but couldn't find the back of the net in Sunday's fixture at the Liberty Stadium, and at White Hart Lane a controversial penalty was all that separated the sides as Tottenham Hotspur took on Hull City.

Miss out on some of the weekend's key moments? Want to see them again? Begin the slideshow to view the Premier League weekend in picture form.

Arteta: On Target. Sent Off.

It was an eventful 15 minutes for Arsenal's Mikel Arteta.

After opening the scoring with a 47th-minute penalty against Crystal Palace, the Spaniard was sent off for a challenge on former teammate Marouane Chamakh just 18 minutes later.

Arsene Wenger's side went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to Olivier Giroud, who netted his fifth goal in the top flight this season.

An Unstoppable Suarez

4 of 20

As Luis Suarez scored his first Anfield hat-trick on Saturday, this was a sight that West Brom goalkeeper Boaz Myhill got to know all too well.

The Uruguayan opened the scoring after just 12 minutes, following it up with strikes in the 18th and 55th minute.

The Baggies pulled one back through a James Morrison penalty in the second half, but Daniel Sturridge put the game beyond reach in the 77th minute to see it end 4-1.

Sturridge: Premier League Top Scorer

5 of 20

Daniel Sturridge ensured that Luis Suarez didn't win all the plaudits at Anfield on Saturday, with his incredible 20-yard chip against West Brom. The strike was his eighth of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign and, between them, Suarez and Sturridge have netted 14 league goals this season.

Rooney Leads Manchester United Fight-Back

6 of 20

Manchester United dodged a home defeat against Stoke City on Saturday, despite trailing the visiting side twice.

At 2-1 down, Wayne Rooney levelled the score with 12 minutes left on the clock and Javier Hernandez sealed the victory two minutes later.

United have taken just eight points from a possible 15 at Old Trafford this season.

Crouch: Ends Stoke Goal Drought

7 of 20

Peter Crouch scored Stoke's first goal in 338 minutes of Premier League football after he was struck by a poor clearance from Manchester United's Jonny Evans...oh, Jonny Evans.

Hernandez on Target for United

8 of 20

Javier Hernandez's header in the 80th minute saved Manchester United from what could have been their second home defeat of the season. It was the Mexican striker's first goal of the Premier League season.

Spoils Even at Carrow Road

9 of 20

Norwich and Cardiff are both without a win in three matches following Saturday's 0-0 stalemate at Carrow Road.

There was a controversial end to the game when Leroy Fer kicked the ball into Cardiff's net following a throw-in that should have been passed to goalkeeper David Marshall. Marshall had previously thrown the ball out of play so that Norwich's Alex Tettey could receive treatment for an injury.

The "goal" was not considered valid by referee Mike Jones. A melee swiftly ensued.

Pochettino's Saints March on

10 of 20

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino saw his side cruise to their third consecutive home win in Saturday's late kickoff against Fulham. The Saints have been defeated just once during the 2013/14 campaign and have conceded only three goals in nine top-flight matches.

Black Cats: Horse Masks

11 of 20

Horse masks and Sunderland scarves? It could only be the Tyne-Wear derby.

Ahead of Sunday's game, fans of the Black Cats were not going to let Newcastle supporters forget last season's defeat and the mayhem that followed after a police horse was punched by a Magpies fan, as reported in the Daily Mail

Debuchy Gets One Back for Newcastle

12 of 20

Mathieu Debuchy celebrates after scoring Newcastle's only goal in their 2-1 derby defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Alan Pardew's side have taken six points from a possible 15 on the road this season.

Fabio Borini: Super Sub?

13 of 20

On-loan Liverpool striker Fabio Borini scored his first goal for Sunderland in Sunday's North East derby. The Italian, who came off the bench in place of Adam Johnson, hit a stunning 20-yard shot six minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win for the hosts.

Newcastle have not beaten Sunderland in the top flight since August 2011.

Poyet's First Win as Sunderland Boss

14 of 20

We're not sure if Gus Poyet is trying to give Newcastle manager Alan Pardew a high-five, a conciliatory pat on the head or a cuff around the ear here. We do know that he'll be relieved to have guided Sunderland to their first win of the 2013/14 season.

Pellegrini's City Slip at Chelsea

15 of 20

Manuel Pellegrini's side, which had earlier been referred to as the Premier League's "biggest sharks" by Jose Mourinho via the Guardian, were undone in the 90th minute of Sunday's game due to a defensive mix up between City's defence and keeper Joe Hart.

We can only imagine that this is what the Chilean manager is watching.

Hart-Ache for City

16 of 20

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart can only watch as Fernando Torres makes the most of a defensive disaster to score the winner for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The scores had been level at 1-1, due to strikes from Andre Schurrle and Sergio Aguero, until Torres pounced in the final minute of normal time.

Torres: He's Back?

17 of 20

Fernando Torres celebrates scoring Chelsea's winner against Manchester City on Sunday. In a performance that was more reminiscent of his form for Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, many are questioning: is he back?

It was the 29-year-old's first goal of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign.

Swansea and West Ham had to settle for a point apiece in Sunday's game at the Liberty Stadium. The draw sees the Hammers in 15th place in the Premier League, with Michael Laudrup's side in ninth with 11 points.

All Smiles at White Hart Lane

19 of 20

There was a relaxed air between Andre Villas-Boas and Steve Bruce before Tottenham's 1-0 home victory against Hull City on Sunday. Spurs have won four of their six top-flight wins with a 1-0 scoreline this season.

Soldado Spot-Kick Seals Spurs Win

20 of 20

Roberto Soldado celebrates scoring from the penalty spot in Tottenham's victory against Hull City. The Spaniard, signed over the summer from Valencia, has scored three penalties for Spurs this season. Last term, Andre Villas-Boas' side were not awarded a single spot-kick.
