Missouri, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech and Nebraska were the only teams in the Top 25 to lose in Week 9. The Tigers and Red Raiders both saw their national championship hopes dashed despite holding second-half leads.
Mizzou led 17-0 at home in the fourth quarter vs. South Carolina but couldn't keep Connor Shaw and the Gamecocks out of the end zone when it mattered most. The Tigers went on to lose in double overtime.
As far as the Top Five is concerned, nothing changes following a slew of blowouts as Alabama still holds down the top spot. The Crimson Tide blasted Tennessee at home, winning 45-10, and will have a bye next week before hosting LSU on Nov. 9.
After Saturday's victory, head coach Nick Saban talked about the two-time defending national champions' focus heading into the bye week, per RollTide.com:
"We've got some big challenges and some stiff competition against some very good teams coming up here. This bye week comes at a really good time for us. We've got a lot of guys nicked up, could use the rest, and also use the time to help some of our players improve. That's going to be our focus for this week.
"
Another title contender that will enjoy some time off in Week 10 is Oregon. The Ducks found themselves in a dogfight with UCLA in Week 9 but came to life in the second half, scoring 28 unanswered points at home to bury the Bruins.
Florida State also won big over NC State on Saturday, but will face another stiff test when it hosts ACC rival Miami (FL) next weekend in a matchup with massive BCS implications.
Meanwhile, Ohio State is now four wins away from a second straight undefeated regular season. The Buckeyes thrashed Penn State in Columbus in Week 9 but will play three of their last four games on the road, including their regular-season finale at Michigan on Nov. 30.
Shifting gears to the Big 12, Baylor is now the last of the conference's unbeaten after hanging 59 points on Kansas, but it will be tested on several occasions after its Week 10 bye. The Bears will play three of the conference's best in Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in consecutive weeks before closing the regular season out against TCU and Texas.
But a lot can change next weekend, and it's important to remember that there are no guarantees as the calendar flips to November.
