Premier League Betting Tips Week 9: Away Teams Worth Backing This Weekend

Leigh WalshJun 7, 2018

Gameweek 9 begins at Selhurst Park as table topper's Arsenal make the short trip across London to take on managerless Crystal Palace in Saturday's early kick-off.

If you're looking for an away side to back, then look no further that Arsene Wenger's charges. They have dropped just two points on their travels this season—a draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns—and they will be eager to get three points on the board with Liverpool, Manchester United and Southampton to come.

Newcastle have two away wins so far this season, and Alan Pardew will be expecting to make that three in the Tyne-Wear derby, while Everton will be hoping to hand Aston Villa their fourth home loss of the season.

Here's a look at the three teams least likely to suffer travel sickness in Gameweek 9.

Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal

Arsenal have taken 10 points from a possible 12 on their travels this season, and when they arrive at Selhurst Park on Saturday they will be expected to make that 13 from 15.

Crystal Palace have lost their last five games by a combined tally of 13-2, while Arsenal have won their matches in the same time frame by 13 goals to five.

Having lost their best player, Wilfried Zaha, to Manchester United at the start of the season, Palace have struggled in all areas of the pitch.

The South London side have conceded 17 goals in the league, but their woes at the back are just the start of it. They have found the net just six times—only Sunderland and Stoke City have worse records—and their main striker Dwight Gayle has no previous experience in the Premier League.

Former Stoke boss Tony Pulis has been linked with the vacant manager position—per BBC Sport—but it’s unlikely that the job will be filled come kick-off time.

Arsenal have been rampant of late, and despite a midweek loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, they should have plenty of strength and depth to ease past Palace.

Sky Bet have Arsenal at 4/11 to take home the win with odds for a draw as long as 4/1. If you’re a fan of the underdog, the Eagles are priced at 13/2.

Sunderland vs. Newcastle

Newcastle showed signs of improvement in their entertaining 2-2 draw with Liverpool last weekend.

Alan Pardew’s side defended better than they had done in previous weeks against Liverpool’s fluid attack force, even after being reduced to 10 men, and the manager will be hoping for more of the same in the Tyne-Wear derby.

It’s safe to say Sunderland don’t quite possess the personnel that Liverpool have at their disposal in the attacking third of the pitch. Gus Poyet’s side are in the unfortunate position of having not just the worst defensive record in the league, but also the second-worst goalscoring record.

The Black Cats are also the not-so-proud owners of the worst start to a season in Premier League history—per Joe Lovejoy in the Guardian.

According to Lovejoy, Portsmouth went through the opening seven games of the season four years ago without winning a point before victory over Wolves in game eight. Sunderland have just the one point—a draw with Southampton—to show this season.

All streaks, even bad ones, must come to an end at some stage, but Newcastle should have the talent to see off Sunderland.

Sky Bet have both teams at 8/5, and a draw at 9/4, but if players like Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and the in-form Loic Remy can perform, then the Magpies will reclaim bragging rights in the North East after last year’s 3-0 defeat.

Aston Villa vs. Everton

Aston Villa have come on leaps and bounds under Paul Lambert’s guidance, but their consistency has been an issue this season.

Superb wins over Manchester City and Arsenal were overshadowed by three losses at home, and it has been a case of two steps forward and one step back for the team in claret and blue.

Their home record will be one of Lambert’s biggest concerns. Villa lost nine times in Villa Park last season, conceding 28 times in their 19 home games; they will need to improve their home form if they’re going to continue their climb up the table.

Everton will be full of confidence when they arrive in the West Midlands. Roberto Martinez’s side have been really consistent this season, picking up just one loss in the league away to Manchester City.

While Everton haven’t exactly set the world alight on their travels this season, they have set up in a way that makes them very difficult to beat. They boast strength and depth throughout the side, particularly in midfield, and with Romelu Lukaku providing the goals, Everton should be in with a good shout of victory at Villa Park.

Sky Bet has Everton at 5/4 favourites for the match, with Villa priced at 2/1.
