2014 QB Recruits Who Will Have to Wait for Chance to Start

Edwin WeathersbyOct 20, 2013

Many quarterback recruits commit to a program with the intent of playing early. However, looking at the 2014 recruiting class, several field generals will have to wait for their chance to start.

Young quarterbacks receive advanced coaching today. Their growth and development starts earlier than passers of past generations. While more and more quarterbacks are coming into college ready to play, a group of them will not be heard from for a few seasons.

A 5-star passer faces an uphill climb on his future school's depth chart, while another quarterback is signing with a school that already has a true freshman stud starting under center. Elsewhere, an ACC school has a commitment from a quarterback, but won't need him to play any time soon due to a superstar it already has at the position.

Player evaluations are based on review of tape at Scout.comRivals247Sports and ESPNU

Stephen Collier

1 of 8

Commitment: Ohio State

Stephen Collier is a 3-star quarterback with a high ceiling. However, the 6'4", 208-pound Georgia native needs to spend some time working on his technique and mechanics.

Collier has great arm strength, sets up quickly and has nimble feet. Yet, he needs to refine his drops, footwork and improve at reading coverages.

The Buckeyes already have 2013 signee J.T. Barrett waiting in the wings to take over for starter Braxton Miller. Therefore, Collier is going to have to wait several years before he has a chance to start.

Brandon Dawkins

2 of 8

Commitment: Arizona

At 6'3" and 206 pounds, there's no denying the physical abilities of 3-star passer Brandon Dawkins. He has good size, can generate exceptional velocity on his throws and is mobile.

However, the California native needs to refine his footwork and improve his accuracy. He's committed to Arizona, but the Wildcats already have Ex-Texas quarterback Connor Brewer primed to take over the reins next season.

If Brewer isn't the starter, then perhaps 2013 JUCO signee Jesse Scroggins will be, as incumbent quarterback B.J. Denker has not been overly impressive.

Dawkins likely will not be heard from for a while in the desert.

Sean White

3 of 8

Commitment: Auburn

Sean White will get his chance at Auburn at some point, but it will not be any time soon. The 4-star quarterback has a quick release, solid arm strength and makes good decisions, but the Tigers are loaded at the position.

Auburn has current starter Nick Marshall available for another year. Plus, freshman Jeremy Johnson has shown he has what it takes to lead head coach Gus Malzahn's offense. White could be a backup for a long time on The Plains.

DeShone Kizer

4 of 8

Commitment: Notre Dame

The Irish lost Gunner Kiel in the offseason, but 2012 starter Everett Golson likely will be back in 2014. Backup quarterback Andrew Hendrix could also return as a fifth-year senior.

That means 4-star prospect DeShone Kizer will have to wait his turn. The 6'5", 207-pound Ohio native has a strong arm, works well from the shotgun and can be used on designed runs.

However, Notre Dame will potentially have two quarterbacks with game experience under their belts. Therefore, unless Kizer sets the world on fire in training camp, he's going to be holding a clipboard for a few years.

JJ Cosentino

5 of 8

Commitment: Florida State

JJ Cosentino is a 4-star quarterback from Pennsylvania who is 6'4" and 223 pounds. He has solid arm strength, can see over the rush to throw through clear passing lanes and flashes good accuracy.

Cosentino has the potential to be a good starter in college, but he will be waiting a while in Tallahassee. Although current starter Jameis Winston could be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, he will be back in 2014.

After that, backup Jacob Coker will be ready to take over, and he certainly doesn't lack talent. So Cosentino's impact at FSU will not be felt for several seasons.

Michael O'Connor

6 of 8

Commitment: Penn State

A talented 4-star prospect, Michael O'Connor displays impressive physical tools. He has great arm strength, can deliver accurate strikes with velocity downfield and also flashes great mobility.

The Florida native sees the entire field well, will work through his progressions and has the ability to make plays with his legs. However, Penn State's program is led by stud true freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg, and he will be in Happy Valley for at least two more seasons.

The earliest O'Connor will be primed to start likely will be in 2016.

Keller Chryst

7 of 8

Commitment: Stanford

Keller Chryst has everything a quarterback needs to not only start in college, but to start as a true freshman. The 5-star prospect is 6'4" and 220 pounds, and has great mechanics, arm strength, accuracy and deceptive athleticism.

However, he is headed to Stanford and head coach David Shaw runs a complex offense. Plus, the current Cardinal starting quarterback Kevin Hogan could return for 2014, and 2013 signee Ryan Burns is a future star on The Farm in his own right. Also, backup Evan Crower is on the roster.

Stanford could choose to bring Chryst along slowly, which will delay his chance to start.
