FSU vs Clemson: Highlighting Top Offensive Weapons in ACC Showdown

Jesse ReedJun 8, 2018

Three of the nation's top offensive weapons will take the field on Saturday night in Death Valley when the Clemson Tigers host the Florida State Seminoles.

These two ACC superpowers enter the game undefeated, but only one will leave Clemson with a shot at the national title.

Florida State features the third-highest scoring offense in the nation, averaging 53.6 points per game. The Seminoles are coming in off a bye week, but this team was clicking on all cylinders two weekends ago when it shut out No. 25-ranked Maryland 63-0.

Clemson will represent this team's first true test of the season. The Tigers have been deadly at home. Boston College put up a big fight last Saturday, however, holding Clemson's offense to just two offensive touchdowns.

Nobody should expect a defensive struggle this Saturday, though, as both teams put up points in bunches. Here's a look at the top offensive weapons in the game.

Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson

Boyd is an exceptional college quarterback who has a shot at winning the Heisman Trophy this year while leading his Tigers to a national championship. He's also a highly-prized NFL prospect who has a shot at being chosen in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Through six games, Boyd has passed for 1,783 yards with 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions, adding another 187 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He out-dueled Aaron Murray in Week 1 as the Tigers knocked off Georgia, and he always seems to rise to the occasion when his team needs him the most.

After throwing five touchdowns against Syracuse two games back, the dual-threat quarterback struggled to connect with his receivers in the end zone against Boston College, throwing just one touchdown on the day.

However, with the game on the line—his team down by four points in the fourth quarter—Boyd found a way to score and put Clemson ahead for good with a six-yard touchdown run.

Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

It's hard to remember that Jameis Winston is a freshman when watching him play.

He enters the game having passed for 1,441 yards with 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions, and he's added another 135 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Winston approaches the game with incredible poise and focus for his age, and though he's only started five games in his young college career he already has draft experts drooling about his pro potential.

ESPN's Todd McShay recently made a bold claim on SportsCenter, calling him a better pro prospect than the aforementioned Boyd, and Bleacher Report's Matt Miller sees a potential No. 1 NFL draft pick in his future:

This freshman hasn't played in an environment like Death Valley to this point in his tenure at FSU, however. It'll be fascinating to see how he handles the adverse conditions this Saturday night with the team's BCS title hopes on the line.

Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

Heading into the season, USC's Marqise Lee was receiving heavy praise as the top receiver in the nation, but Watkins has emerged as the lead dog in this race, thanks to a big first half of the season.

Through six games, Watkins has caught 36 passes for 582 yards and four touchdowns. He's caught one touchdown in each of his last three games, and he's averaging 16.2 yards per reception.

Watkins has the physical size and strength to beat press coverage at the line of scrimmage, and he possesses the speed to beat teams over the top. He's utilized as a decoy at times for Clemson, as teams often commit two or three defenders to him on passing plays.

He'll give Florida State's secondary all it can handle this Saturday, and chances are, Watkins will win more battles than he loses.
