Aaron Murray and CJ Mosley Headline Week 5's SEC Players of the Week

Brian LeighSep 30, 2013

For the second time in three weeks, Aaron Murray guided Georgia to a win over a Top 10 team, and according to the SEC Digital Network, that feat has helped earn him the honor of Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Murray threw for 298 yards and combined for five touchdowns on the afternoon, going up against the vaunted LSU defense but refusing to let his Bulldogs back down in a 44-41 victory.

Even after losing all-world running back Todd Gurley to a first-half injury, Murray kept the offense composed and led them to an impressive output.

Georgia has now put up 35 points in all four of its games this year and 41 in each of its games against Top 10 teams (the other being a 41-40 win over South Carolina). It has moved up to No. 6 in the nation, well within the national title conversation, and looks like a favorite to win the SEC East.

Joining Murray on the Players of the Week list are:

  • Defensive POW: LB C.J. Mosley, Alabama
  • Special Teams POW: K Marshall Morgan, Georgia
  • Freshman POW: CB Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida
  • Defensive Line POW: DE Michael Sam, Missouri
  • Offensive Line POW: OG A.J. Cann, South Carolina

Mosley led Alabama's defense to an impressive shutout against Ole Miss, recording nine tackles and forcing a safety in the 25-point win. Sam, meanwhile, posted three sacks in Missouri's win over Arkansas State, helping the Tigers remain undefeated on the year.

Hargreaves, one of the top recruits in the nation last year, continued his hugely impressive debut season for the Gators by notching his third interception of the year against Kentucky. He leads all Florida players and all SEC freshmen with those three picks.

Morgan played a big role, like Murray, in Georgia's win over LSU, drilling all eight of his kicks, including three field goals and a career-long 55-yarder. Cann, a bulking guard, helped pave the way for South Carolina's rushing game, which racked up 225 rushing yards in a tricky road tilt against Central Florida.

Congrats to Murray and all the other winners!
