UEFA Champions League 2013: Key Players Who Will Decide Tuesday's Games

Aidan ReynoldsJun 2, 2018

While it's true that teams win titles, sometimes all it takes is a moment of individual brilliance to put a game away.ย The UEFA Champions League is rightly regarded as the pinnacle of club football, and Tuesday's fixtures offer a chance for players to show their true quality on the biggest stage.

Mesut Ozil, Arsenal

Mesut Ozil's skill was never in doubt when he was at Real Madrid. Nevertheless, questions remained about his ability to put together such impressive performances in the English league.

He has resoundingly answered them by immediately making an impact at the Emirates, becoming a focal point of the attack with his fantastic vision and passing ability.

Arsenal face a tough test against Napoli, with Rafa Benitez's side flying in Serie A right now. However, this sort of stage is almost a second home to Ozil, so he should have no problem with leading the threat on goal.

Aaron Ramsey has had a remarkable scoring run recently. Combining that with Ozil's instinctive knack for assists makes this a game from which Arsenal should emerge victorious.

David Villa, Atletico Madrid

Although he hasn't stamped his authority on La Liga in the manner expected when he scored against Barcelona in August, David Villa has quietly gone about making himself an important member of this Atletico team.

Los Rojiblancosย are in the middle of their best start to a season in La Liga's 77-year history, so it's safe to say that confidence will be high going into this fixture with Porto.ย

However, the Portuguese side had a 100 percent record at home in last year's Champions League, so this will be a difficult game for Atleti.

Villa returned from injury to lay on a perfect pass for Diego Costa to score the goal that beat Real Madrid last week. The Spaniard also played in the Barcelona victory over Porto in 2011, so he has the experience needed here.

Atleti's impressive start to the season looks set to continue, and Villa should be at the centre of that.

Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund

Warming up for a Champions League tie with two goals in the Bundesliga is definitely a good omen for Robert Lewandowski. His Borussia Dortmund side looked fearsome as they trounced Freiburg 5-0.

Dortmund manager Juergen Klopp was understandably pleased with his side when speaking to Sky Television (viaย Sky Sports):

"

When my team get going, then this job is such a pleasure. The first half was truly exceptional.ย I'm absolutely delighted with our first 44 minutes. You just can't play a better pressing game than that.

"

Klopp will serve his one-match UEFA suspension as Dortmund face Marseille, so a good showing in the Freiburg game was imperative.ย

While Marseille will offer a bigger challenge, with Lewandowski and BVB in this sort of rampant form, the German side should triumph in their own stadium.
