EPL Week 6 Fixtures: Preview and Predictions for Best Upcoming Matches
The fixtures computer has churned out some eye-catching matchups in week 6. So let's take a look at some of the best on offer this weekend and, despite the increasingly unpredictable nature of the Premier League, take a guess at what's going to happen in each of them.
Tottenham vs Chelsea: Mourinho's men to shade it in a tight, tactical affair
The Premier League’s lunchtime kick-off will see a clash not only between two City rivals, but two genuine title challengers.
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham and the sub-plots run rife through this one. All the pre-match chatter centred around the fractured relationship between Mourinho and his former protege Andre Villas-Boas.
But let’s focus on the on-pitch matters. Whilst the game is a clash of two sides packed with attacking talent, both have based their solid early form on stingy defences. Spurs have conceded just once in the Premier League this season, and they’ve yet to give up a goal at White Hart Lane since April. Mourinho will make sure his Chelsea side, too, are compact and tough to beat.
Both teams like to counterattack and spring forward with pace from deep positions. This could lead to a tactical stalemate early on, but the subtle adaptations and alterations that each manager makes as the contest wears on should make for fascinating viewing.
This one could go either way, but I fancy Chelsea to nick it late on.
Prediction: Spurs 0-1 Chelsea
Swansea City vs Arsenal: Goals, goals, goals at the Liberty Stadium
If you’re looking for a game bursting with attacking play, be sure to tune into this clash. Both sides love to get the ball down and play on the front foot and should serve up a feast of attacking football.
With neither side likely to line-up with a typical defensive midfielder within their ranks, starts like Mesut Ozil and Michu should revel in the space that will be afforded to them between the lines.
It will be interesting to see to what extent fatigue plays a role, with both sides having had to undergo European and League Cup commitments. Arsenal have the bigger squad and have been able to rotate players in and out of their first XI more freely.
Bearing this in mind, along with Arsenal’s wonderful eight-game winning streak on the road, expect the Gunners to get the better of this encounter. The nature of the contest should see lots of space in the middle of the park and that will see Ozil cause Swansea no end of problems.
Prediction: Swansea City 2-3 Arsenal
Everton vs Newcastle United: Lukaku, Baines and Barkley To Make Light Work Of Magpies
If the Toffees take to the field with the same vibrancy, purpose and quality that emerged in the second half at Upton Park last Saturday, then they should have far too much for the visitors on Monday night.
Led by the set-piece brilliance of Leighton Baines and the superb centre-forward play of Romelu Lukaku, Everton blitzed a West Ham side that are notoriously difficult to break down. Factor in the continued development of Ross Barkley and the return to form of Kevin Mirallas, all of a sudden Roberto Martinez has assembled a fearsome attacking unit at the club.
The side trying to stifle their attacking flow under the Goodison Park lights will be Newcastle United. To say the Magpies looked shaky in defense last week would be something of an understatement. They conceded three times at home to a Hull City side who, it has to be said, are pretty toothless going forward.
Everton are unbeaten at home this calendar year and have not conceded on their own patch since January. That won’t change on Monday night.
Prediction: Everton 3-0 Newcastle United
