College Football Rankings Week 4: Which Teams Got Absolutely Screwed?

Randy ChambersJun 2, 2018

Week three of the college football season was quite eventful. There was the big game between Alabama and Texas A&M, but there was also a Big Ten team that barely avoided an upset and another Big Ten program that lost in a bizarre finish.

All of those crazy games affected the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll, which were both released Sunday afternoon.

Some teams made a slight jump in the polls, but there were a handful of teams that were absolutely screwed. The SEC and Big Ten share a pair of teams that didn't get much love in the latest polls.

Louisville

1 of 5

Ranking Last Week: AP - Seven USA - Seven

AP Ranking: Seven

USA Today Coaches Ranking: Six

Expecting Louisville to move up after beating Kentucky is a stretch. However, it just confirms what most already knew: The Cardinals aren't going to make a splash in the polls unless teams above them start to lose.

Kentucky was the toughest opponent on Louisville's schedule, but even that wasn't enough to budge voters at all.

Louisville can't complain much with a Top 10 ranking, but unless Oregon, Clemson and others start falling, a seven spot will be the best it will ever reach. That must be a screwy feeling.

Ole Miss

Ranking Last Week: AP - 25 USA - 25

AP Ranking: 21

USA Today Coaches Ranking: 22

It's time to start buying Ole Miss stock. The Rebels may not be ready to win an SEC title just yet, but they are a legit team that everybody should be watching very closely.

Their offense is one of the most explosive in the SEC with wide receiver Donte Moncrief and running back Jeff Scott leading the way. They also get after it defensively with a unit that is ranked fourth in the SEC.

The Rebels already have two impressive wins with victories over Vanderbilt and Texas. We can't say the same for Baylor or Florida. It may be tough for some of you to believe in Ole Miss, but this team can compete with some of the best.

Michigan

3 of 5

Ranking Last Week: AP - 11 USA - 12

AP Ranking: 15

USA Today Coaches Ranking: 14

Isn't winning the object of football?

Herm Edwards once said you play to win the game! Hello?

With this being the case, Michigan shouldn't have taken a major step back in the polls after beating Akron 28-24. Should the score have been that close? Of course not. But Michigan still handled its business and found a way to win.

Why didn't Alabama fall in the polls after sleepwalking against Virginia Tech?

Every team can have an off day as long as they don't make it a habit. This is a slight overreaction from voters.

Wisconsin

4 of 5

Ranking Last Week: AP - 20 USA - 18

AP Ranking: 24

USA Today Coaches Ranking: N/R

It doesn't matter where Wisconsin ended up in either poll, the Badgers were hosed in more ways than one.

Simply put: Wisconsin should have won the game against Arizona State, of course, barring a cheap shot field goal in the final seconds. Instead, the referees must have had money on the game and decided to watch 18 seconds tick off the clock and then run off the field. No, seriously. Check it out for yourself.

Under these circumstances, Wisconsin shouldn't have fallen at all in either poll. The outcome should have been considered a draw. However, the good news for Badger fans is that an upcoming game against Ohio State could regain the respect from pollsters.

Texas A&M

5 of 5

Ranking Last Week: AP - Six USA - Six

AP Ranking: 10

USA Today Coaches Ranking: Nine

Texas A&M fell four spots in the AP Poll and three spots in the USA Today Coaches Poll. While that may not sound like much, many of the teams ahead of the Aggies haven't proved anything this early in the season.

Yes, Johnny Manziel and company did lose to Alabama, but it was Alabama! The Aggies still managed to keep up with the Crimson Tide in the 49-42 loss, losing the game in the final seconds. You could count on one hand how many teams could fare as well as the Aggies against Nick Saban's squad.

Texas A&M's defense didn't look the part, but the overall team showed it is worth the hype. A fall this far is a little unfair considering the competition.
