Fantasy Football Week 2: Highlighting Under-the-Radar Options at Every Position

Patrick ClarkeSep 15, 2013

Week 2 of the NFL season is upon us, and while many fantasy owners around the country are already locked into their lineups for this weekend, it's never too early to start preparing for next week.

Whether you're looking to upgrade at quarterback or add a wide receiver with the potential to pay off down the road, below we'll run through every position, highlighting a pair of under-the-radar options for your fantasy roster moving forward.ย

Quarterback

Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

Although Philip Rivers and the Chargers can't be trusted in the waning moments of football games in real life, the Bolts' inability to close games won't derail your fantasy hopes.ย

The bottom line is that Rivers tossed four touchdown passes on Monday night against the Houston Texans. In Week 2, the once popular signal-caller, who is owned in just 30 percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues, will take on an Eagles secondary that surrendered 329 yards passing and two scores to RG3 in Week 1.

Terrelle Pryor, Oakland Raiders

Staying in the AFC West, Raiders dual-threat quarterback Terrelle Pryor is a phenomenal pickup for Week 2 and beyond, seeing as he'll be going up against the worst team in the league.ย

The Jacksonville Jaguars couldn't do anything right in Week 1. Meanwhile, Pryor threw for 217 yards and a score while rushing for 112 yards on 13 attempts. Keep in mind that the Jaguars allowed the Chiefs to rush for 121 yards as a team on opening weekend.

Running Back

Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints

Although he's not guaranteed to get a ton of touches week in and week out, Pierre Thomas is a versatile back who wound up touching the ball 13 times in Week 1.

Thomas is owned in just 25 percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues this season, but he is coming off a solid performance against the Atlanta Falcons. He averaged nearly five yards per carry on nine rushes and caught four balls for 16 yards.ย

If you're desperate for a productive back, Thomas is your guy.

Ronnie Brown, San Diego Chargers

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown averaged 5.4 yards per carry in Week 1 and caught two balls for 24 yards. Unfortunately, he carried the ball only five times for the entire game.

But if Brownโ€”who is owned in just over one percent of all ESPN fantasy leaguesโ€”can earn more touches this weekend against the Eagles and going forward, he could turn out to be a worthwhile addition for fantasy owners.ย

Wide Receiver

Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans

Titans veteran Nate Washington was targeted seven times in Week 1 and wound up reeling in four passes for 46 yards. While those numbers won't get it done in the fantasy world, he should turn out better numbers against Houston in Week 2.

Washington has racked up over 230 yards and a touchdown on 10 total receptions in his past three outings against division rival Houston. Even better, he's only owned in 16 percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues.

Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons

Fantasy owners shouldn't have any trouble adding Atlanta wideout Harry Douglas this season. Despite being targeted six times in Week 1 and catching four balls for 93 yards, the under-the-radar Falcons receiver is owned in only a little over three percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues coming into Week 2.

While Julio Jones and Roddy White will continue to be Matt Ryan's favorite targets, Douglas is definitely worth some consideration given his ability to stretch the defense and churn out a lot of yards on just a few targets.

Tight End

Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles veteran Brent Celek is owned in about one out of every four ESPN fantasy leagues heading into Week 2, but that's an increase compared to this time a week ago.

Celek caught two balls for 56 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against the Washington Redskins, and he should have another favorable matchup this weekend against the San Diego Chargers, who surrendered 94 yards and three touchdowns to Houston's tight ends on opening weekend.

Dallas Clark, Baltimore Ravens

Dallas Clark led the reigning Super Bowl-champion Ravens in targets on opening night against the Denver Broncos, catching seven of the 12 balls thrown his way for 87 yards.

The 34-year-old is owned in just 13 percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues and should have a solid game in Week 2 against a Cleveland Browns defense that allowed 272 yards through the air in Week 1.

Defense/Special Teams

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders defense will have the best matchup of any defense in Week 2 going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars rank dead last in total offense after one game and averaged a pitiful 2.5 yards per play in Week 1's 26-point loss to the Chiefs.

Oakland's defense and special teams are available in most leagues, but if you have them on your bench, be sure to start them this weekend.

Buffalo Bills

Another unit that won't be hard to get hold of this September is the Buffalo Bills defense and special teams. Buffalo will take on Carolina in Week 2 and should produce some solid numbers one week after forcing three turnovers, two sacks and a touchdown against the New England Patriots.

Kicker

Garrett Hartley, New Orleans Saints

Garrett Hartley is only owned in 20 percent of all ESPN fantasy leagues. That's surprising considering he connected on all three of his field-goal attempts in Week 1. He also scored on two extra points in the Saints' season-opening win.

If you have him, start him in Week 2. If not, look to add him before Week 3.

Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers

Packers kicker Mason Crosby didn't get a single look at a field goal in Week 1, but he did knock through four extra points. Look for him to get plenty of extra-point chances in Week 2 at home against the Redskins, as well as a field-goal attempt or two.

After all, he's averaged 33 field-goal attempts per season over the past six years in Green Bay.
