Queen's Home Buckingham Palace to Host First Football Match

Alex LivieSep 3, 2013

We know HRH The Queen is a fan of certain sports, horse racing being one of them, and we can almost certainly add football to that list following confirmation Buckingham Palace is to play host to its first match as part of the Football Association’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The Press Association’s Laura Elston reported, via the Daily Mail, that two of the oldest amateur clubs in England will meet in the gardens of The Queen’s residence in the capital city.

Green reports that the Duke of Cambridge, who is the president of the FA, helped arrange the game that will take place between Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC, both members of the Southern Amateur League, on October 7 this year.

Elston’s piece quoted the Duke of Cambridge as saying: "In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level."

In order to get the grounds of Buckingham Palace ready for the match, the FA will ensure their best man is on the job as Wembley groundsman Tony Stones will work on the pitch, Elston reports.

Greg Dyke, chairman of the FA, was also quoted as saying: "These volunteers are the heartbeat of football. Without them, the game simply wouldn’t function at a grassroots level, and it is only right that the FA honours their tireless and selfless work."

There has been no confirmation as to whether Queen will be on the touchline for the game.
