Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Red Devils' Deadline-Targets

Mike MoraitisJun 8, 2018

After a disappointing transfer period thus far, Manchester United boss David Moyes is looking to make a splash that will improve his squad at the end of the August transfer window.

Neil Custis of The Sun (subscription only) originally reported that Moyes was attempting to embark on a £77 million shopping spree before the Monday deadline in the hope of salvaging what has otherwise been a frustrating August.

Let's take a look at the potential moves Moyes is eyeing with all that cash and just how possible they are to happen.

Ander Herrera

After missing out on Barcelona and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas, Moyes is looking to improve his midfield by signing a pair of midfielders before the August window closes. First on his list has been Athletic Bilbao midfielder, Ander Herrera.

David McDonnell of the Daily Mirror states that United actually came close to meeting the price of Herrera's buyout clause of £25 million, but that still wasn't enough.

According to the same report, Moyes is ready to offer £30 million to land the talented 24-year-old.

While the numbers may differ for United's attempt to land Herrera, there's no question Moyes is stepping up his game in some capacity in order to make a last-ditch effort to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford.

However, landing Herrera could be tough considering Bilbao boss Jose Urrutia said getting rid of Herrera would need a special circumstance as the club isn't interested in money.

The Mirror piece reports Bilbao club president Jose Urrutia as saying:

"

There is an offer for Ander Herrera. We received it yesterday and we have informed that we will not negotiate for our players.

Our club is different. We create an emotional bond. Our objective is not to make money.

For that a player should leave he needs to state his intentions to leave the club and pay the buy-out clause.

"

The good news is McDonnell's report says that Herrera is in fact ready to leave and that fully opens the door for United to make a last-minute move for the Bilbao ace.

The Everton Duo

It seemed like a realistic possibility that United would land the Everton duo of Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, but it's growing less and less likely by the day.

According to David Anderson of the Daily Mirror, an increased bid of £38 million wasn't enough for Everton and it appears it will take around £50 million combined to make this deal happen.

That is an astonishing amount of money for Fellaini and Leighton together, and it goes to show that Everton is quite keen on retaining at least one or both players.

Anderson's report points out that Everton would like to hold onto Baines, who will likely receive a new contract offer should he stay.

Everton manager Jose Martinez already looks to be planning for Fellaini's exit, so it stands to reason that he is the more realistic option to leave Everton before the transfer window closes.

The Daily Mirror's McDonnell confirms in his report that Fellaini is more likely to leave Everton than his teammate. He reports that it's possible that United may be in the running for just one as opposed to both players because Martinez doesn't want to lose the pair at the moment.

Daniele De Rossi

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi is also on Moyes' list of desired players, but after United's failed £10 million bid it looks as though he will be unattainable.

According to Hannah Duncan of the Metro, Roma boss Rudi Garcia has just about ended all hopes of the Red Devils signing De Rossi:

"

Daniele de Rossi isn’t only a big player, but he’s also a big man, Garcia said.

He has been here at Roma for a long time and he wants to play with this jersey.

We spoke when he came back from his holidays and we said that, if it got past a certain date, he would certainly remain with us.

He will stay here for the whole season and this is something that satisfies me a lot.

"

Based on Garcia's quote, it looks like De Rossi is staying and wants to stay. On top of that, if you take Garcia at his word, it's getting to that point late in the window that makes it even more doubtful a move will be made.

It remains to be seen if this is just posturing by Garcia to get a better deal, but from all accounts it doesn't look likely that De Rossi will be playing in Old Trafford after Monday night.
