Awful Soccer Fans Make Turkish Player Cry and Leave the Pitch
Stick and stones may break my bones, but words shouted from the stands may cause me to break down and leave the pitch later resulting in my boss calling me out for being soft.
That's pretty much how things went down for Volkan Sen, who left the game between his Trabzonspor and Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig recently.
Today's Zaman (h/t Deadspin's Tom Ley) has a report on the peculiar moment when venom tossed from fans in the form of horrible words proved too much for one athlete.
"Other fans tried to console Şen after his breakdown in the 43rd minute of the game. Florent Johan Malouda replaced the midfielder, who was unable to continue the game.
Three spectators have been detained in connection with the incident. They were released after being interrogated at a police station.
"
We have no confirmation on what was being said to garner such a reaction. Commenters over at Deadspin have some ideas, and all of them paint quite the nasty picture.
A couple comments state some of the things said related to insults involving his recently deceased mother, which is echoed in a post over on Reddit.
If true, it would explain the outpouring of emotion for a football player who was reduced to tears from strangers who wanted nothing more than to belittle him from the stands.
If the story weren't already horrible, Sen received some tough love from Trabzonspor Chairman Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, via Today's Zaman.
"“Swearing at players is unacceptable. It is impossible for us to accept such a thing, but it [walking off the pitch] was not becoming of a professional football player,” he said, calling the act childish.
"
What we might have here are fans who took heckling to a deplorable end, chiding a man that may have just lost his mother.
You go ahead and take all the time you need, Sen. As for the rest of us, this concludes your daily reminder that humans can be the absolute worst sometimes.
