Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger Takes Easy Way out by Blaming Bad Luck

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

Arsene Wenger has been through enough transfer windows to understand the expectations that come with them, especially at a top Premier League club like Arsenal.

Blaming bad luck for a lack of signings is almost comical.

Although it's understandable Wenger is looking for an excuse, the luck card shouldn't have been near the top of his list. Quite frankly, a better option is simply taking the blame for the inability to land any marquee players so far.

Wenger remains confident the Gunners will be able to add a couple pieces before the window closes, but said the lack of additions prior to the new campaign was due to bad fortune, Kevin Palmer of ESPN reported. He also said the club has worked hard to make deals.

"

Maybe it was bad luck [that transfers didn't happen]. We work very hard on transfers. It didn't come off as quickly and as well as we would have wanted. In football, you have to deal with every situation and be patient. So as long as the transfer window is open, until the last minute, anything can happen on any front.

I am very, very happy with the squad we have, the quality of the players. Numbers wise we are a bit short to cope for all the targets a club like us have. I would be worried we are not strong enough [if we signed nobody]. We will not go into the new season with only the number of players we have.

"

Every manager with a Champions League side works hard on transfers. If they don't, their tenure with the club usually doesn't last very long. There's a gigantic difference between working hard and actually getting deals done on a consistent basis.

Luck plays a negligible role in the process. It comes down to identifying attainable targets, making realistic offers and doing everything humanly possible to complete a deal when one is within reach.

Of course, it isn't as easy as it sounds. There are several other factors in play, including other clubs chasing the same targets, budget concerns and player demands, but that doesn't stop other managers from finding a way to get things done.

This was a summer where it was important for Wenger to get big deals done, and he's failed to do so, at least so far. He can silence the critics with a couple of notable deals before the deadline, but the jury will remain out until then.

The reason is Arsenal have a very strong foundation in place. While players like Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud ensured the Gunners were on the right track, one or two major signings could have made them a serious title contender.

As mentioned in the report, Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain are among the big names linked to Arsenal throughout the summer. All would have represented a significant step in the right direction, but no agreements were reached.

In the cases of Suarez and Rooney, it was valuable time spent chasing players whose current clubs insisted they weren't for sale. In the case of Higuain, Arsenal got beat by Napoli, which stepped up to make sure the striker wouldn't get away.

Once again, there are numerous factors in play during the transfer window. A manager's job is by no means easy during those periods, when there's an intense focus on their every move. But luck is a very minor issue.

Wenger made a mistake by suggesting bad luck was a component of the club's lack of transfer success. He should have taken the blame and rose to the occasion in the final days of the window.
