Premier League Week 2 Predictions: Clubs That Will Remain Unbeaten

Patrick ClarkeAug 23, 2013

Unbeaten giants Manchester United and Chelsea are set to clash in one of the most anticipated early season matchups of the 2013-14 Premier League campaign on Monday afternoon.

The battle at Old Trafford will conclude Week 2's slate of matches, which will feature a number of other undefeated clubs looking to continue their early success. But not every squad will be so lucky.

Here we'll highlight three clubs that will remain unbeaten in Week 2.

Liverpool

Even without Luis Suarez on the pitch, Liverpool is a talented squad capable of threatening the Premier League's top clubs in 2013-14.

With Daniel Sturridge continuing to come on strong for Brendan Rodgers' crew at the top of the lineup, the Reds are poised to keep up their winning ways against Aston Villa this weekend. Villa is coming off a tough loss to Chelsea on Wednesday and will experience a quick turnaround as it gets set to host last season's seventh-place finishers just three days later.

Sturridge (six shots and a goal) and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet (five saves including a penalty save in the 89th minute) were the heroes for Liverpool against Stoke City in Week 1, and both will be ready to help lift the club over the top at Villa Park on Saturday.

Manchester United

The defending Premier League champions will look to remain perfect in the league table on Monday when they host fellow English powerhouse Chelsea at Old Trafford

Knocking off Jose Mourinho's side will be no easy task for the Red Devils, but David Moyes' group certainly possesses the firepower to hand the Blues their first defeat of the EPL season. In United's 4-1 thrashing of Swansea City last weekend, Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck each scored twice despite losing the possession battle to Swansea.

Chelsea will have a tough time keeping United's weapons under wraps over the course of 90-plus minutes on Monday, and that's why the Red Devils have the edge in this can't-miss Week 2 showdown.

The Blues have goalscorers across the board, but no one who can be counted on to score consistently.

Southampton

The Saints will host Sunderland on Saturday at St. Mary's Stadium in a matchup of two of the league's worst teams a season ago. Both clubs managed to avoid relegation, but neither was in serious contention for the EPL crown.

Heading into Week 2, Sunderland is much more desperate for a victory. But don't count on the Black Cats to pick up three points on the road, where they won just four league matches a year ago.

Sunderland was lacking in the final third against Fulham in its opener, ultimately losing 1-0 despite outshooting the Cottagers 21-5. Meanwhile, Southampton defeated West Brom 1-0 at The Hawthorns thanks to a late Rickie Lambert penalty conversion.

Look for an aggressive Lambert to help lead Southampton to another win this August.
