EPL Week 2 Picks: Clubs That Will Score Key Early-Season Victories

Tim DanielsJun 5, 2018

The Premier League season is a long journey, a 38-match trek from late August until early May. One of the most important factors is getting off to a strong start to avoid digging an early hole, whether it be for a European spot or avoiding relegation.

That's why these matches are important even though the initial surge of excitement has likely worn off after the opening fixtures last weekend. Every clash carries equal weight, no matter if it's the second weekend of action or the final matchday.

With the in mind, let's examine some predictions for Week 2; more specifically, a closer look at a trio of clubs that will earn key victories this weekend. For a complete look at the schedule for second week of EPL action, visit the Premier League's official site.

Arsenal

Arsenal got off to a dream start in their opener against Aston Villa. Olivier Giroud scored inside the first 10 minutes and seemingly the Gunners were off to the races. But Villa fought back to earn a surprising 3-1 road victory and put immediate pressure on the Arsene Wenger and Co.

They responded well in a midweek Champions League playoff round match against Fenerbahce. A three-goal victory should provide the club with a much-needed boost of confidence heading into a tricky road test against Fulham.

The Gunners must continue to play an aggressive brand of football as they did against Fenerbahce. Get as many touches for possible for Theo Walcott and Giroud, and good things are going to happen. Expect Arsenal to do that and get back on track.

Everton

The Roberto Martinez era at Everton began with a draw against Norwich. As was the case throughout the preseason, it's clear the transition remains very much a work in progress. But there were plenty of positive signs, at least offensively, in the second half.

In recent seasons, the Toffees have been one of the fringe European squads. They are always battling for one of those coveted berths, and coming up short should serve as motivation early in campaigns. Of course, any points lost now will need to get made up later on.

It's an example of the importance of these early matches. Everton should be able to take a step forward defensively against a West Brom side that was held off the scoreboard by Southampton last week. That, paired with Everton's continued progress on the attack, should result in three points for the Toffees.

Tottenham

Tottenham have been flying below the radar for much of the offseason and the early stages of the new campaign. With most of the focus on the Manchester rivals as well as Chelsea and Arsenal, Spurs are avoiding the spotlight, which is often a positive.

After just missing out on the Champions League last season, getting back in Europe's marquee club competition is obviously one of Tottenham's main goals. A victory over new arrival Crystal Palace in the opener was the first step.

Next up is a matchup with Swansea, the defending Capital One Cup champions. The Jacks were overwhelmed by Manchester United in their opener. It presents a perfect opportunity for Spurs to beat them before they find top form and keep pace with their fellow top clubs.
