Premier League Week 2 Picks: Predicting Scores for Each EPL Match

Rob GoldbergAug 22, 2013

The Premier League got off to an eventful start, featuring a handful of surprising finishes and dominant performances by individual players.

Fans across the league will hope that Week 2 can replicate the same excitement and intensity across the league.

While only a few clubs came into the year expecting to come away with a league title, everyone is still technically alive and will do their best to remain near the top of the table for as long as possible.

This is certain to help create an interesting week of football as everyone looks to get an edge. Here is a look at what to expect in the upcoming set of matches.

Saturday, Aug. 24

Fulham vs. Arsenal

Arsenal did not get the start it was hoping for when it lost 3-1 to Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium. However, the pressure at home is starting to get to Arsene Wenger and company, and it is possible that the club plays better on the road.

Fulham is still a talented group that will not go down easily, but Arsenal should at least get going on the offensive end.

Prediction: Fulham 2, Arsenal 2

Everton vs. West Bromwich Albion

Although Everton had some issues defensively in its opening draw against Norwich City, this is not something that will continue throughout the season.

West Bromwich have struggled on the attack and are unlikely to get onto the scoresheet in this match.

Prediction: Everton 1, West Bromwich Albion 0

Hull City vs. Norwich City

After seeing how overmatched Hull City was against Chelsea, it is hard to imagine the club doing much better in its first season back in the Premier League. The score was only 2-0, but the match was nowhere near that close.

Norwich City will look to build off its opening draw behind new forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

Prediction: Norwich City 2, Hull City 0

Newcastle United vs. West Ham United

West Ham have quietly been improving during this offseason and are clearly among the top half of the Premier League. They should be able to get their second win of the season against Newcastle, who are better than they looked against Manchester City but will still struggle for quite some time.

Prediction: West Ham United 2, Newcastle United 1

Southampton vs. Sunderland

A successful penalty in the 90th minute gave Southampton a win in their opening matchup, although victory is not something the club will see too often this season.

On the other hand, Sunderland made a number of quality upgrades during the summer and should be able to pull themselves out of the league basement. Their redemption tour starts with a strong performance against Southampton.

Prediction: Sunderland 1, Southampton 0

Stoke City vs. Crystal Palace

Each side suffered a 1-0 defeat in its opening match and will hope for a better result this time out. Unfortunately, offense is a major problem for both clubs as neither truly has an elite scoring option to take over when needed.

This will result in a match with little opportunities and even fewer notable moments.

Prediction: Stoke City 0, Crystal Palace 0

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool

This will be an interesting matchup between the solid attack of Aston Villa and the great defensive line of Liverpool. Christian Benteke will certainly cause problems, although the Reds' experience will prevent anything from getting out of hand.

The difference is that Liverpool has a big advantage on the attack and should be able to do enough to get a win in this match.

Prediction: Liverpool 2, Aston Villa 1

Sunday, Aug. 25

Cardiff City vs. Manchester City

After an impressive performance against Newcastle, it is hard to imagine Manchester City failing to dominate this matchup as well. The visiting club will simply have too many weapons on the offensive end for Cardiff City to stop, and this one should be over quickly.

Prediction: Manchester City 4, Cardiff City 0

Tottenham vs. Swansea City

As Tottenham continue to press on without Gareth Bale, the players continue to show that this is still a solid team. Roberto Soldado can become one of the top scorers in the league this season, and he has plenty of help around him to succeed.

Swansea City have the offensive talent to make it interesting, but they will be unable to keep up with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Prediction: Tottenham 2, Swansea City 1

Monday, Aug. 26

Manchester United vs. Chelsea

This is the match that everyone is looking forward to in Week 2. This match will be more than just earning three points—it will be about sending a message to the league that the winner is the new favorite to win the league.

Unfortunately, neither side is going to get an advantage as the offensive firepower ends up keeping this score tied. Chelsea might be a little better at this point, but playing the match at Old Trafford will even things out.

Chelsea will not be able to stop Robin van Persie, and Manchester United will struggle with Eden Hazard and Juan Mata, ending things in a draw.

Prediction: Manchester United 2, Chelsea 2
