Guinness Cup 2013: Each Remaining Club's Most Important Player

Rob GoldbergMay 31, 2018

The Guinness International Champions Cup features not only some of the best clubs in the world, but there is some world-class talent leading each side in this tournament.

After starting with eight clubs, the event has reached its conclusion with two matches remaining. Chelsea and Real Madrid will battle in the final, while the Los Angeles Galaxy will face AC Milan for third place in the tournament.

Those in attendance at Sun Life Stadium or watching at home will see a number of excellent players on the pitch, although some are more important than others. Obviously, the European squads are still preparing for the season, but each one will be more likely to win with a strong performance out of these men.

Los Angeles Galaxy: Landon Donovan

After winning last year's MLS Cup, the LA Galaxy are struggling this season and currently sit in the middle of the table. One of the major reasons for this is that Landon Donovan has been out for most of the year.

Between matches for the United States national team, injuries and his own hiatus, the veteran has only made 12 starts this year out of a possible 22.

However, now that he is back, the Galaxy are among the best on the continent. Donovan has great vision on the attack and makes everyone around him better, which leads to more goals for the club.

If he has a strong performance against Milan, the host team has a chance to pull out a win.

Milan: Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli missed the first match of the tournament and then played the first half of last match against Chelsea. As he continues to get his fitness up, he should have an even bigger role in the next match.

That would be great for Milan, who could not get a single goal in the previous contest.

The former Manchester City player transferred back to Italy during the season last year and was fantastic for Milan in the second half. He scored 12 goals in 12 starts, and he should be just as effective this season with more time to get familiar with the system.

There are other offensive threats to help him out like 20-year-old Stephan El Shaarawy, but the club needs Balotelli to score in order to be successful.

Chelsea: Juan Mata

Although Chelsea have plenty of talent on both ends of the pitch, Juan Mata is the person who makes things happen.

Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz are strong anchors for the defense, while Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard possess plenty of skill on the attack. The club is also hoping for big things out of Romelu Lukaku this season.

Still, Mata proved last season with his 12 goals and 12 assists in league play that he will do whatever it takes to help his side win. He also seemed to come through when Chelsea needed a goal, and this should continue with more confidence next season.

The Spanish player has come in as a sub in the last two matches, but he should have a big role against Real Madrid.

Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo

The list of players better than Cristiano Ronaldo ranges from no one to just Lionel Messi. No matter who you think is better, he is clearly one of the two best in the world and is not slowing down anytime soon.

Ronaldo scored 34 goals last season with 10 assists as his club finished second in La Liga. If his side is going to improve upon that performance, it will need the Portuguese star to be just as good this year.

Although he has not played all that much in this tournament so far, he already has a goal and two assists to show for it. This type of efficiency makes Real Madrid the favorite to win one more match to take the title.

Unless Ronaldo has a miserable performance on Wednesday, it is tough to imagine Chelsea pulling out the win.
