Real Madrid vs. Chelsea: International Champions Cup Final Viewing Info and More

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

When the International Champions Cup began it appeared Real Madrid and Chelsea were on a collision course for the final. Neither marquee European side disappointed, setting up a high-profile final in the inaugural event.

Real Madrid defeated the only American squad in the tournament, the Los Angeles Galaxy, in the opening round before edging Everton in the semifinals. They have received production from most of their stars, including the always dynamic Cristiano Ronaldo.

Chelsea knocked off a pair of Italian sides to reach the final. First, they eliminated Inter Milan from championship contention. Then the Blues took out Inter's rival AC Milan in the semifinals. Real pose a tougher challenge than either of those teams.

One caveat during the first couple of rounds was that the tournament remained a preseason event for the European clubs. So even though there were plenty of high-profile matchups, managers were still focused on getting their squads ready for the league campaigns first and foremost.

That should change with a title on the line. While there are certainly more important matches on the horizon for Real Madrid and Chelsea, it's hard to imagine they won't go all out to capture the championship since they've reached the final.

For Real, that means a lot of time on the ball for Ronaldo, Mesut Oezil and Angel di Maria. The Chelsea defense, which hasn't allowed a single goal in the tournament so far, should serve as a good test for the terrific attacking trio.

The other player to stand out for Los Blancos has been Isco. The 21-year-old midfielder's talent was obvious during his time with Malaga, but it's been a surprise to see him make such a seamless transition to Real. He's shown off solid distribution skills and should only continue to get better.

His contributions are important because this match features two extremely talented midfield groups, and that's where the title will be decided. Whichever side is able to gain control of possession and dictate play has a huge advantage.

Chelsea will counter Real's star power with some of their own, including Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar. They headline an underrated offensive squad, which gives Blues supporters plenty of reason to be optimistic as the new season approaches.

The club's defense has also been stout throughout the final couple rounds. A veteran group led by John Terry, the Blues defenders have seemingly already reached midseason form. And they'll need to play at that level against Real.

As has been the case since the preseason began, the biggest question for Chelsea is finding a striker who can provide the finishing touch on a consistent basis. Andre Schuerrle has shown signs he can fill that role, but he needs to build off his early success.

Ultimately, this should turn into a free-flowing match with plenty of chances at both ends. Each side features no shortage of attacking talent, and it should shine through as much as it has to help Real Madrid and Chelsea reach the final.

It should be a very entertaining match regardless of the result, but the slight edge goes to the Spanish club.

Prediction: Real Madrid 3, Chelsea 2
