Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Latest Buzz on Wayne Rooney, Luiz Gustavo and More

Chelsea is a little slow merging into the transfer season, but the increased rumors point towards the Blues beginning to get up to speed. 

August figures to be an important month for Chelsea as they begin to form their identity under Jose Mourinho. While there may not be a lot of moves, the ones that are made should carry a big impact. These next three certainly would. 

Wayne Rooney

Chelsea's pursuit of Wayne Rooney is certainly no secret, and it's not going away. 

As Simon Johnson of the Independent (subscription required) reports, the Blues already went knocking at Old Trafford once with a £27 million bid for the striker.

Now Johnson says Chelsea is going to up the bid by £13 million and extend it to £40 million.

It appears that Mourinho is getting a little antsy on the trigger. Here is an excerpt from Johnson:

Mourinho had insisted that the Blues would only make one bid, however, the need to acquire him means the club will return with a much higher offer. Manchester United do not want to sell the 27-year-old forward to a Premier League rival. But the former Everton star is still angling for a move away from Old Trafford this summer and is believed to have made Chelsea his first-choice destination.

"

Rooney's wishes aside, Manchester United is in a great position. They continue to do their own search on the transfer market, and are in no rush to part with Rooney in the meantime.

I don't see the Red Devils keeping a disgruntled Rooney beyond this summer window, and it seems like all roads are leading Rooney to Chelsea. This deal is more a matter of if, than when. 

Luiz Gustavo

Chelsea's broadening transfer interest has lead them to Luiz Gustavo. At least this is what Dave Kidd of the Mirror discovered:

Chelsea are ready to table a £15 million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, writes Dave Kidd of the Sunday People.

Returning boss Jose Mourinho has prioritised the signing of a holding midfield player for the Stamford Bridge club.

He has doubts about John Obi Mikel’s ability to play in that role.

Gustavo is a shrewd target for Chelsea. He is an underrated-young midfielder.  

He is strong, athletic and brings a big physical presence. He is a skilled tackler and one of the best back-tracking midfielders in the game.

This would fit nicely with the offensive-minded corp at Chelsea, and most notably, David Luiz. Gustavo would be able to cover the ground that Luiz has a tendency to leave vulnerable. 

Fernando Torres

Johnson also touched on the plan of action if Rooney does make his way to Chelsea. He reports that either Torres or Demba Ba could be on the way out.

A change of scenery is best for Torres. He hasn't performed up to expectations and he is playing in the shadow of the reported transfer fee of £50 million. 

Spanish newspaper SuperDeporte, hints at a potential landing spot for Torres. Valencia is said to be interested in the 29-year-old.

It's really just up to the Red Devils to make a decision on Rooney now.
