International Champions Cup 2013: Previewing Remaining First-Round Matchups
The summer's most anticipated exhibition tournament, the 2013 International Champions Cup, continues this week with three intriguing first-round matchups.
Among the big-name clubs that will be on display are Juventus, Chelsea and Real Madrid, who are all legitimate contenders to raise the tournament crown this August. Everton, Inter Milan and Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy round out the remaining clubs in action.
A.C. Milan defeated Valencia in the tournament's opener in Spain on Saturday to advance to the second round, where it will await the winner of Chelsea vs. Inter Milan in one of the weekend's two semifinal showdowns.
With the action heating up across the United States, let's take a look at what's still to come.
Juventus vs. Everton
Where: AT&T Park in San Francisco
When: Wednesday, July 31 at 11 p.m. ET (4 a.m. BST)
Everton will get a huge test in the opening round of the International Champions Cup on Wednesday when it opens up against Italian powerhouse Juventus.
The Serie A giants won their domestic league by nine points last season and feature elite talents like Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
For the Toffees, midfielder Marouane Fellaini will be a player to watch. The 6'4" midfielder is extremely versatile and can excel in a variety of positions on the pitch. The 25-year-old Belgian has been linked to Manchester United this summer and is sure to gain more fame this coming season as he continues his ascent.
Even with Fellaini playing at his best, Juventus will be an overwhelming favorite to win this matchup and become the second Italian team to advance in the winner's bracket.
Chelsea vs. Inter Milan
Where: Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis
When: Thursday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. ET (1 a.m. BST)
Chelsea, one of the world's most popular clubs, will kick off the International Champions Cup on Thursday night (wee hours of the morning at Stamford Bridge) against Inter Milan. Another English-Italian clash, this matchup pits one of England's finest squads up against one of Serie A's most beloved teams.
The Blues have made a few additions this summer, the most significant thus far being the acquisition of talented Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel. The 20-year-old can score and create, and some believe he's poised to take over Frank Lampard's role in midfield once the veteran moves on.
Meanwhile, despite having won the Serie A title five straight years from 2005 to 2010, Inter Milan have hit a rut, missing out on the past three league championships and finishing ninth in the Serie A table a season ago, more than 30 points back of first-place Juventus.
Real Madrid vs. Los Angeles Galaxy
Where: University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix
When: Thursday, Aug. 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET (2:30 a.m. BST)
The reigning MLS champions will be put to the test on Thursday night in Phoenix when the Los Angeles Galaxy square off against Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.
Landon Donovan, who has been scorching hot for the United States men's national team this summer, scoring five goals and recording more than half a dozen assists at the 2013 Gold Cup, will be on display for his club team at University of Phoenix Stadium.
But it's safe to say that all eyes will be on Ronaldo, who has netted over 200 goals in 199 career appearances for Real dating back to 2009.ย
For football fans in America who rarely get a chance to see the Portuguese superstar operate up close, Thursday's opening-round clash in the desert will provide a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
