MLB Trade Rumors: Top Landing Spots for Remaining Pitchers on the Market

Jesse ReedJun 1, 2018

Hot pitching wins championships.

It's no surprise then that as MLB teams ramp up their efforts to make a successful postseason run, general managers are looking at potential trades that will strengthen their pitching staffs.

There are a lot of trade rumors floating around the web on this front—some more substantial than others.

Here's a look at a few of the top pitchers up for auction, along with the latest rumors about where they'll be landing before the trade deadline on July 31.

Will Oakland Really Make a Bold Move for Jake Peavy?

One of the hottest names on the trade block, Peavy, has garnered reported interest from the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, along with the Athletics, as noted by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

Traditionally one of the most frugal teams in the league, Oakland doesn't typically shell out big cash for top players. Given the fact that Peavy is set to earn $14.5 and $15 million the next couple of seasons, via Spotrac.com, it didn't seem likely that the A's would be willing to battle the likes of Boston and St. Louis to land their man.

Billy Beane appears ready to break the mold with Peavy, however, as a White Sox source recently told Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago that Oakland was "in front" of the Peavy sweepstakes:

Money aside, landing Peavy would be a huge boon for the A's. The team is sitting in first place in the AL West at 61-43, 5.5 games ahead of the second-place Texas Rangers. By acquiring Peavy, Oakland could create even more breathing room for itself down the stretch.

Even at 32, he's a solid starter who could potentially get Oakland over the top this year.

Detroit in the Market for Reliever Luke Gregerson

The San Diego Padres feature a couple of phenomenal late-game relievers in Gregerson and Huston Street. Interestingly enough, Gregerson is the one receiving the most interest from teams looking for bullpen help, as noted by Heyman:

Among the teams that have sniffed around are the Detroit Tigers, which "are showing continued interest" in landing the setup man, as noted by Jon Morosi of Fox Sports:

Featuring a solid ERA of 2.98 with four wins, five losses and three saves this season, Gregerson would be a savvy pickup for the Tigers. While they're in first place in the AL Central, it wouldn't hurt to add some quality pitching.

Detroit features one of the most dynamic offenses in the league, and adding a skilled reliever like Gregerson would give the team a huge boost late in games.

Oliver Perez Could Be Headed East

Seattle is currently 12 games behind Oakland in the AL West and doesn't stand a chance of catching up, considering the team's abysmal offense.

Lost in the mediocrity is pitcher Oliver Perez, who is having a phenomenal year for the Mariners. Logging just over 38 innings thus far, Perez has an ERA of 2.35 with two wins, two losses and two saves and has struck out 52 batters.

That's big-time production, and contending teams have noticed.

The Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves are reportedly interested in landing the left-hander, as noted by Heyman, and both teams could use the bullpen help. Baltimore is trying to keep pace with the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, while Atlanta is looking to strengthen its position atop the NL East.
