Gold Cup 2013: When and Where to Catch Semifinal Matches from Dallas

Jun 8, 2018

What started as a 12-team field of participating CONCACAF countries has now been whittled down to four competing for the Gold Cup.

The United States, Honduras, Panama and Mexico are still all vying for their opportunity to play in the finals match in Arlington, Texas

The two semifinal matches should provide fans with plenty of intriguing action as the United States and Mexico try to lock up their third consecutive Gold Cup final showdown against one another. It would be the United States' fourth consecutive trip to the finals.

The wild cards will be Panama, which has already defeated Mexico once, and Honduras, a team looking to make its first Gold Cup final since 1991 when it lost to the U.S. on penalty kicks.

Here's all the information you'll need to catch both matches along with a quick look and prediction for each.

United States vs. Honduras

When: July 24, 7 p.m. ET

Where: Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas.

The United States will enter this match as a pretty heavy favorite and deservedly so. The Stars and Stripes have been dominant throughout the tournament.

One key to the Gold Cup run has been the emergence of Chris Wondolowski, who is tied with Panama's Gabriel Torres for most goals in the tournament with five, per ESPN Stats & Info

Wondo isn't the only one that has caught the scoring bug though. The U.S. has 16 goals in four Gold Cup games thus far, including five by five different players in a quarterfinal win over El Salvador.

Honduras will be looking to pull off the upset after going 2-1 in group play and defeating Costa Rica, 1-0, to advance to the semifinal match. With just four goals in four games, Honduras' attack hasn't looked anything like that of the United States.

However, Honduras' defense has played fairly well. Other than a 2-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago, the Hondurans haven't allowed any other goals.

Look for the United States' attack to eventually beat Honduras' defense, but it won't be as easy as it was against El Salvador

Prediction: USA 2, Honduras 0

Panama vs. Mexico

When: July 24, 10 p.m. ET

Where: Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Watch: FOX Soccer Channel

The Gold Cup's second Wednesday offering should be a bit more competitive than the first match.

These two sides should be familiar with each other as they have met twice before already this year including a group play match in the tournament.

So far, it's been Panama that holds the advantage.

Panama battled Mexico to a scoreless draw in their World Cup qualifying match earlier this year and then got the better of El Tri with a 2-1 win in their first Gold Cup match.

However, this one could be different. Mexico dominated the possession battle in their Gold Cup encounter, holding the ball for over 70 percent of the match, according to ESPN FC

What El Tri can do with those chances is going to determine the outcome. If Meico can capitalize on its ability to dominate the ball, it will avenge its loss. If not, Panama's counterattack will once again produce enough offense to win.

Prediction: Mexico 2, Panama 1
